파생상품 사용기업의 특성에 관한 연구

Abstract

경영환경의 급격한 변화와 환율변동에 따른 불확실성으로 인해 기업이 직면하는 재무위험은 증가하고 있다. 이러한 위험관리를 위한 위험회피수단으로 파생상품거래를 통한 기업의 헷징활동에 대한 관심과 사용이 증가하고 있다. 본 연구는 ‘파생상품 등의 회계처리’ 기준이 기업의 재무보고에 전면적으로 적용되기 시작한 2000년부터 2010년까지 파생상품의 사용을 공시한 국내 상장기업을 대상으로 파생상품을 사용하는 기업의 특성에 대해 실증적으로 분석하였다. 표본기간을 확장하고 연도별특성과 산업별특성을 통제한 후 5,213개 표본을 대상으로 로짓모형을 사용하여 기업의 파생상품 선택에 영향을 주는 요인들을 분석한 결과, 부채비율, 기업규모, 당좌비율, 외화자산비중, 외화부채비중, 해외매출비중 등이 기업의 파생상품 사용을 유의적으로 설명하는 중요한 특성변수인 것으로 검증되었다. 부채비율이 높고, 기업규모가 크며, 당좌비율이 낮고, 외화자산과 외화부채 그리고 해외매출비중이 높은 기업일수록 파생상품을 사용할 경향이 더 큰 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 파생상품 사용기업의 특성 연구의 기본적인 틀을 제시할 수 있으며, 실무종사자들에게 파생상품을 통한 위험관리에 대한 전략적 시사점을 제시할 것으로 기대된다.Companies are faced with financial risk because of sudden changes in business environment and the uncertainty due to exchange rate fluctuations. To manage these risks, companies have increasingly engaged in hedging activities through derivatives. This study investigates the characteristics of firms using derivatives. Korean data were collected over 2000-2010 period since the accounting for derivatives was established in 1998 and began to be applied to financial reporting comprehensively.Through the logit analysis, determinants of using derivatives can be summarized as follows. The likelihood of using derivatives is positively related to the financial leverage, firm size, the portion of foreign currency assets, the portion of foreign currency liabilities, and the portion of foreign currency sales and negatively related to the quick ratio. The results provide the evidence that the use of derivatives is higher for firms with higher financial leverage, larger size and greater foreign exposure and with less quick ratio.
