뉴라이트운동과 역사인식 - '비역사적 역사'

Abstract

뉴라이트 운동은 정치지형의 역전에 따르는 정치적 상실감과 노무현 정부가 추진한 ‘과거청산’에 대한 위기감 속에서, 2004년을 전후하여 폭발적으로 성장하였다. 뉴라이트 운동의 역사해석 체계는 2008년을 계기로 두 단계로 나누어 살펴볼 수 있다. 교과서포럼이 2008년 『대안교과서 한국 근ㆍ현대사』를 출간하기까지가 1단계이고, 2011년 한국현대사학회가 결성되어 교육과정 개정에 정치적으로 개입하는 것이 2단계이다. 1단계 운동은 기존 역사학계와 교과서에 반영된 역사인식을 비판하고 대안 교과서를 발간하는 데에 중점을 두었다. 반면 2단계 운동은 전국경제인연합회의 지원을 받아 새로운 인식체계를 담은 교과용 보조자료를 만들고, 역사 교육과정 개정에 정치적으로 개입하는 방식으로 진행되었다. 『대안교과서』에 드러나는 역사해석의 특징은 ‘식민지근대화론’의 바탕을 이루는 ‘근대화이론’, ‘대한민국 중심주의’의 토대에 깔린 ‘국가주의’, ‘북한배제론’의 기반에 자리잡은 ‘문명론’이라는 세 쌍의 대쌍구조를 통하여 잘 드러난다고 할 수 있다. 한편 2011년 이후 한국현대사학회가 교육과정 개정에 개입하면서, ‘자유민주주의’의 해석을 둘러싸고 역사학계와 첨예한 갈등구조를 형성하게 되었다. 이 갈등의 본질은 대한민국의 정체성을 어떻게 해석할 것인가 하는 점에 있을 것이다. 요컨대 뉴라이트 역사해석은 전통, 세계, 야만과의 단절을 통하여 근대, 국가, 문명의 순수성을 확인하려는 데에서 그 본질을 확인할 수 있는바, 이를 ‘비역사적 역사’라고 명명할 수 있을 것이라고 보았다.Behind the exponential growth of the New Right Movement in Korea around 2004 lay a sense of deprivation and defiance aroused by the turnaround in the Korean political terrain and the active promotion of ‘coming to terms with the past’ by the Roh Moo-hyun government. The New Right Movement’s perception of history shows twos tages. The first stage pertains to the period leading up to the publication of the Alternative Textbook - Korean Modern History. The second stage has to do with to the establishment of the Association for Contemporary Korean History in 2011 and its political engagement in the revision of the standard history curriculum. During the first stage, the Movement focused its efforts on criticizing the historical perception of existing academia and history textbooks. In the second stage, the focus was shifted to publishing supplementary curriculum materials with the support of the Federation of Korean Industries and becoming politically involved in the revision of the standard history curriculum. The historical perception of the Alternative Textbook relies on three pairs of corresponding ideas: modernization as the backbone of colonial modernity, nationalism hidden underneath Korean-centrism, and civilization as the basis for exclusionism against North Korea. Having been involved in the revision of the standard curriculum since 2011, the Association for Contemporary Korean History has stood in sharp conflict with history scholars over how to understand ‘liberal democracy.’ The conflict ultimately comes down to defining Korea’s identity. In terms of perception of history, the New Right Movement is essentially aimed at achieving a pure form of modernity, the state and civilization by making a clean break with tradition, the world, and barbarism, hence deserving of the title, ‘Ahistorical history.’
