Political Connection and CEO Turnover Patterns of Chinese Listed Companies

Abstract

Political resources are essential to firms` sustainable growth. In light of the resource based view and social capital theory, this paper examines how firm manage their political resources over time. Firms obtain political resources at the organizational level through their top managers`` personal political connection. When the top managers`` political resources are fully exploited and need renewing, the top managers with political connection are likely to be dismissed and replaced by those with new political resources. By using the data of Chinese listed company, this study investigates the contextual roles of political connection in affecting CEO turnover. The results shed a new light on understanding the influence of a special social capital, political connection on a change in the governance structure, CEO turnover, in China.정부의 자원 배분 역할이 중요한 개발도상국에서 기업이 가진 정치적 자원과 능력은 기업의 생존에 중요한 영향을 미치고 있다. 자원준거이론(Resource based view) 및 사회자본이론(Social capital theory)에 근거하여 본 연구는 기업이 어떻게 내부의 정치적인 자원을 유지, 개선하여 성장하고 있는지 조사하였다. 구체적으로, 기업이 고용한 최고경영자의 정치적인 역량을 지속적으로 갱신하기 위하여 새로운 정치적 자원을 가진 후임자로 교체하는 과정을 추적하였다. 중국의 중소기업 자료를 기반으로 Gompertz생존분석과 Logit 회귀분석을 활용하여 가설을 증명하였다. 이론적으로 본 연구는 개인 차원의 정치적 자원이 조직의 단위로 흡수되는 구조를 밝혔다는 점에서 기존 조직이론에 기여를 기대한다. 또한 그 동안 거의 연구되지 못했던 중국의 최고경영자의 교체에 대해서 실증적으로 탐색했다는 의미도 찾을 수 있다.
