Abstract
Obstruction of frontal sinus ostium could be the reason of frontal sinusitis. Frontal recess cells are ethmoid cells which exist under the frontal sinus ostium. These cells are commonly divided into anterior and posterior group. In embryology, frontal sinus could be arised from frontal recess cells. There has been few studies on the effect of posterior frontal recess cells on frontal sinusitis. We designed this study to assess the effect of frontal recess cells on frontal sinus anatomy and development of frontal sinusitis. We used Brillance 64-slice computed tomography scanners(Philips Medical systems) for paranasal sinus CT and compared radiological result of frontal recess cells with frontal sinus anatomy and frequency of frontal sinusitis. Frontal recess cells showed no statistically relevant result on frontal sinus anatomy. Presence of anterior group frontal recess cells showed no influence on frontal recess anatomy. The presence of frontal bullar cell was significantly associated with the development of frontal sinusitis by multiple logistic regression models. The narrowness of nasofrontal isthmus could be the cause of frontal sinusitis. The frontal bullar cell might by significant association with the nasofrontal area. Because cases of the type 3 and type 4 frontal cells are lacks, so more largely designed study might be needed.
