『창조』에 나타난 초기 주요한 시 고찰 - 시적 자아의 양상을 중심으로－

Abstract

주요한은 근대문학의 선구자이며, 민요와 시조의 부흥을 통해 조선의 전통성을 살리고자 한 국민문학파라는 이원적인 평가를 받아 왔다. 이러한 평가는 평자들이 주로 시의 양식적 특성에 따라 시의 특성을 논한 데에서 비롯된 것이며, 또한 주요한 스스로 내놓은 담론의 결과물 때문이라 할 수 있다. 그러나 주요한의 시는 좀 더 복잡한 양상을 지니고 있다. 초기 주요한의 시에는 양분된 시적 특성의 사이로 근대와 전통의 어느 지점에도 정박되지 못한 혼돈과 분열의 자아가 나타난다. 이는 근대 초기 불안과 소명의식이 교차하는 식민지 지식인의 보편적 상황에서 기인하는 것이기도 하지만, 그보다는 주요한 스스로 지녔던 고민이 시를 통해 육화되어 나타난 것으로 보는 게 보다 정확하다. 『창조』 단계의 주요한의 시는 하나의 특성으로 획일화할 수 없는 다양한 특성을 지닌다, 그의 시는 단형과 산문 등 시형 상의 다양성뿐만 아니라 시적 정서와 시적 자아의 양상에서도 다면적 양상을 드러낸다. 무엇보다 그의 시의 자아는 분열적 양상과 전일적 양상으로 나타나고 있다. 최초의 시집 『아름다운 새벽』에 게재된 시들은 자연을 대상으로 한 낭만적 정서와 더불어 미지의 영역에 대한 두려움을 표출하는 화자가 전일성으로 나타난다. 하지만 이는 주요한뿐만 아니라 다른 시인들의 시에도 나타나는 양상이라 할 수 있다. 하지만 주요한의 시에는 갈등과 분열의 정서를 지닌 자아의 혼돈이 나타난다. 특히 『창조』 1호부터 5호에 발표했던 시들의 경우 시적 자아의 분열이나 세계와의 거리감을 드러낸 시를 통해 식민지 근대에 대한 부정의 정서를 표출하였다. 하지만 이후 주요한은 조선의 정서와 전통을 나타내는 민요와 시조를 통해 조선문학을 세계문학의 반열에 올릴 것을 주창한다. 이러한 담론중심의 문학적 선언은 주요한의 문학에 대한 다채로운 특성들을 거세하는 결과를 낳는다. 전 시기에 걸쳐 주요한의 시적 궤도를 살펴보면 주요한은 스스로 계몽문학의 목적성에서 벗어나 미적 주체 성립을 위해 노력하겠다는 의지를 표명했으나 민족을 선도하고 민족의 정신을 고취시키려는 사회적 소명에 몰입한다. 그러나 문학관이나 가치의 변화나 작품의 미학적 수준은 그에 미치지 못한다. 이는 내적 자아와 사회적 자아의 길항 속에서 사회적 자아에 함몰, 미학적 측면에서는 후퇴한 결과라 할 수 있다. 그러나 타자로서 근대초기를 살았던 시인의 내면의 혼란과 균열의 고통을 드러내는 시는 주요한의 시를 외래 추수적이거나, 전통지향의 추상적인 시를 양산한 시인으로만 평가하는 것이 지나치게 경직된 태도임을 확인시킨다.The purpose of this study is to clarify the various aspects of Chu Yo-han`s poetry in Changjo. His works show dualistic tendency on traditional and modern trends. In other words, Chu Yo-han tried to establish modernity of poetry, and then reconstruct Ballad and a Korean verse, Sijo. His two actions are Contradictory. But it`s not due in the transformation of the Literature values. It is the result of his own discourse. The Group in Changjo sought to produce pure literature in the first place and they argued that the expression of self. But inside there was a sense of confrontation against Enlightenment Literature and Intellectuals of the 1910s, Choi-Namsun, Lee-Gwangsoo. Since than he changed the literary claims and he wanted Korean literature to draw up the position of world literature through Ballad and a Korean verse, sijo with Chosun`s emotions. Unfortunately, such a declaration through the literary discourse got rid of an excellent and variety characteristics of literary. The poems written by him in Changjo are more varied and better than those. Those poems have a variety of formats and a variety of poetic self. His poetry represented a healthy life, as well as the fear of unknown in the world. In addition, it represented the poetic self with the emotion of conflict and division. Especially his poems by published in edition of 1~5 expressed the negative emotions against colonial modernity. Nevertheless Persistence of traditional aesthetics has brought his potry back. Failed to harmonize inner self and social self, Chu Yo-han was fascinated by the desire of power.
