The History of the firm theory in Economics - what is the origin of firm theory -

Abstract

We categorize the theories of the firm into two groups : the contractual and the resource-based approach. We retrace their lineages and show Coase to be the originator of the contractual view and Penrose to be the developer of the resource-based view. Knight initiates firm theory by developing its essential elements that then serve as the basis for the work of both Coase and Penrose. Coase both extends and narrows Knight’s work on the mainstream economic paradigms such as marginalism, the dichotomy of the market and firm, and the supremacy of the former over the latter. Penrose extends Knight’s static model by making it dynamic and building in evolutionary theories about firm growth while less emphasizing the boundary between market and firm. 본 연구는 문헌연구를 통해 기업이론의 기원을 탐색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 우리는 기업의 본질을 설명하는 이론들이 계약이론과 자원이론으로 구분되며, 계약이론은 코스 (Coase)의 기업이론에 기원을 두고 있으며, 반면에 자원이론은 펜로즈(Penrose)의 기업 이론에 기원을 두고 있음을 발견하였다. 또한 우리는 코스의 기업이론과 펜로즈의 기업 이론이, 기업이론의 근간을 제시한 나이트(Knight)의 기업이론에 근거하고 있으나, 나이 트의 이론을 서로 다른 방향으로 발전시켜왔음을 발견하였다. 즉 코스는 나이트의 이론 을 주류경제학의 패러다임에 접목시켜, 한계주의(marginalism)와 기업과 시장의 분리를 강조하였으며, 시장이 기업에 우선한다고 주장한 반면, 펜로즈는 나이트의 정태적 모델 에 진화주의론적 시각을 접목시켜 기업의 성장에 초점을 맞춘 동태적 기업모델을 발전 시켰다. 기업이론에 대한 통일된 보편적 이론이 아직까지 제시되고 있지 있음을 감안할 때, 본 연구는 기업이론들의 이론적 기원을 살펴보았다는 측면에서 공헌점을 가지고 있으며, 보편적 기업이론의 개발을 위해서는 다양한 관점에서의 지속적인 이론적, 실증적 연 구가 필요함을 제시한다.
