Nylon 12/graphene nanocomposites were prepared via in-situ ring opening polymerization of laurolactam in the presence of small amount of graphenes. Two different graphene oxides were used for this: one is 12-aminoacid grafted graphene oxide (AA-GO) and the other one is obtained by reduction of AA-GO by hydrazine (AA-rGO). Morphology, thermal, mechanical, rheological properties, and thermal and electrical conductivities of the nanocomposites were investigated by means of XRD, FE-SEM, DSC, DMA, TGA, tensile test, and melt rheological analysis. XRD and FE-SEM analysis revealed that the two different type of graphenes are dispersed uniformly at nanometer scale in the polymer matrix. Tensile test, dynamic mechanical analysis, and TGA showed that the nanocomposites showed a greatly enhanced mechanical properties and thermal stability as compared to neat nylon12. DSC analysis showed a noticeably increased melt crystallization temperature and degree of crystallization in the nylon 12/graphene nanocomposites, indicating an effective heterogeneous nucleating effect of the graphene. Melt rheological studies revealed that the nanocomposites exhibited a more solid like behavior and stronger shear thinning behavior compared to neat nylon 12, which was more prominent at higher graphene content in the polymer matrix. Nylon 12/graphene nanocomposites showed lower surface resistivity and higher thermal conductivity than neat nylon 12, which are more significant in AA-rGO based nanocomposites as compared to AA-GO based ones. Moreover, the nanocomposites exhibited shape memory effects under heating or NIR irradiation. The shape fixing and recovery is improved with the increasing graphene content in the nanocomposites, which are also more significant in AA-rGO based nanocomposites as compared to AA-GO based ones.-
