dc.description.abstractBackground Papua New Guinea is one of the many countries South Pacific region that has limited access to proper medical supplies. The people around the region including PNG have been using the Complementary and Alternative medicine to relief the health related issues in their daily living. Specific studies confirmed women uses more CAM modalities (Adams, Sibbritt, & Lui, 2011). However little is known and documented. The toxic materials contained in the CAM modalities uses by women groups especially pregnant mothers and their babies are of vital concerns. Methods This research examines the prevalence of the CAM use among women during pregnancy in Port Moresby and further explores the determining factors that determines the use of CAM. Results CAM users were significantly differed from non-CAM users by education, residential area, ethnicity and pharmaceutical drug effects. Massage, herbs, betel nut, prayer and stinging brush are commonly used. CAM was used to help relief pregnancy symptoms delivery process and considered to be harmless. Conclusion In general, this study is a first study found a high prevalence of CAM use during pregnancy which is considered to be highest in South Pacific. It’s timely to ensure all health care professionals are aware of the benefit and risk of the therapies. They can able to provide advice to the CAM users accordingly-
