Abstract
Building Information Modeling (BIM) nowadays rapidly adopted by all stakeholders of the construction industry. The BIM process has proven to be future of construction industry, moreover, advantages of BIM are much higher than its disadvantage. BIM related process like 3D BIM has improved the visualization of the project along with design information. The process of 4D and 5D BIM give a boost to cost and schedule planning in construction projects. BIM based parametric modeling provide a new dimension to 3D models by object-based modeling. It improves the construction planning process by exchange of details information for all component of construction projects. Design alternatives become easy due to changeable parameters in BIM-based parametric modeling. However, despite addressing multiple areas in construction by BIM process some areas of construction industry still demand more attention like earthwork. It has a huge impact on construction cost and it did not attain full benefit of BIM process yet. The impetus of study in this thesis is to address earthwork modeling using BIM process. For this purpose, the study is divided into basic three parts. The first part of the study is the development of earthwork BIM library using the parametric technique in subassembly composer. Basic earthwork section is designed by assigning default parameters. The second major part involved detail explanation of 3D earthwork process for utilizing BIM library section. The complete process is divided into six step from data collection to final 3D model in Autodesk Civil 3D. In the third part, results from the first and second part is implemented on case study of a road project in South Korea. The study prospects for the future is to improve the earthwork planning and eliminate the traditional method. The study will provide basic guidelines for future study to address earthwork operations using BIM-based parametric modeling.
