최인호 성장소설 연구

Abstract

본고는 최인호의 1970년대 성장소설을 대상으로 당대 시대적 배경과 맞닿아 있는 반(反)성장서사의 양상과 그 의미를 규명하는데 목적이 있다. 본고의 논의는 아동이 성장 주체로 등장하는 최인호의 1970년대 초기단편소설 「술꾼」(1970),「모범동화」(1970),「처세술개론」(1971),「예행연습」(1971) 네 편을 연구대상으로 한다. 모든 성장의 기제는 성장과 반(反)성장사이의 근원적인 갈등으로부터 비롯된다. 그러나 통념적인 성장소설이 대부분 성장서사의 흐름을 취하고 있던 것과 달리, 1970년대 최인호의 성장소설에서는 반(反)성장서사의 흐름이 두드러지는 작품들이 돋보인다. 이는 자본주의 사회 구조로부터 귀결된 것으로 아동의 이러한 왜곡된 성장과정에 초점을 맞추어 논의를 진행하였다. 성장은 개인의 삶에서 정체성 형성의 문제뿐 아니라, 사회구조에 걸맞은 각자의 역할과 소속을 부여받는 과정으로 확장된다는 점에서 관련된 시대적 배경을 살펴보는 것은 불가피하다. 최인호 소설의 배경이 되는 1970년대 사회는 급격한 산업화로 인하여 비약적인 경제발전이 이루어졌고, 물질적인 사고가 최우선의 가치가 돼버린 타락한 자본주의의 시기라 할 수 있다. 이와 같이 순수한 자연이 아닌 부패한 사회 구조가 성장과정의 아동에게 어떤 영향을 끼치고 있는지 함께 주목하였다. 본고에서는 주체의 성장과정 속에서 드러나는 반(反)성장서사의 양상을 각각 배경, 체험 방식, 결과로 나누어 살펴본다. 최인호가 묘사하고 있는 아동은 냉소적이며 나이에 맞지 않는 조숙한 모습을 띠고 있다. 이는 아동이 산업화의 왜곡된 영향으로 타락해버린 성장 세계에 대해 자각하고 있다는 것을 의미하며, 어른으로 성장하는 것이 결코 성숙한 과정만은 아니라는 사실을 이미 간파하고 있다는 것을 의미한다. 따라서 최인호의 소설 속에 등장하는 성장 주체인 아동의 문제적이고 왜곡된 반(反)성장의 모습을 면밀히 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 또한 최인호의 소설 속에서 개인이 겪고 있는 성장 갈등의 양상을 분석함으로써 작가가 구현하고자 했던 반(反)성장서사 이면의 의미를 살펴보는 논의의 확장도 가능할 것이다. 따라서 Ⅱ장에서는 먼저 본고의 이론적 바탕이 되는 성장소설의 개념과 흐름, 1970년대의 시대적 배경 속에서 나타나는 반(反)성장서사의 양상에 대해 살펴본다. 이를 토대로 Ⅲ장에서는 최인호의 구체적인 텍스트를 통해 반(反)성장서사의 양상이 어떻게 형상화되고 있는지 그 배경과 반(反)성장의 체험,결과 차원으로 나누어 논의한다. 본 연구를 토대로 최인호가 그의 1970년대 성장소설에서 두드러지게 나타내었던 반(反)성장서사의 양상에 대한 다양한 연구들이 앞으로 보다 더 활발히 논의될 수 있길 바란다. 이는 작가 최인호의 섬세하고 예리한 시대적 통찰력과 더불어 그의 뛰어난 문학적 기교를 한 번 더 살피고 조명할 수 있는 계기가 될 수 있을 것이다. 핵심어: 최인호, 성장소설, 반(反)성장서사, 1970년대, 자본주의, 산업화, 성장의 왜곡, 성장 주체; This study attempts to investigate the features and the implications of anti-growth narrative that reflects the historical backgrounds in Choi In-ho’s novels of 1970’s. The study focuses on the four of his early short novels written in the 1970s including "Drinker" (1970), "Exemplary Fairy Tale" (1970), “Introduction to art of living” (1971), and “Rehearsal” (1971), in which the children appear as the main character of the growth or development. The mechanisms of all development arise in the underlying conflict between development and anti-development. Yet, unlike many conventional growth novel of the time following a trend of a growth narrative, Choi’s growth novel in the 1970s are remarkable for their anti-growth narrative. This is known to be resulted from the capitalist social structure, hence the latter discussion of the study focused on such distorted process of growth among children. It is inevitable to examine the historical background in that one’s growth or development expands not only to the formation of identity in the individual’s life, but also to the process of receiving each of his/her role and belonging that correspond to existing social structure. Choi’s novels are unfolding against the backdrop of Korean society in the 1970s in which a rapid economic development led by an accelerated industrialization was achieved, and an evident decadence of capitalism was prevailing with an extreme materialism. In this regard, the study discussed the effect of the unscrupulous social structure rather than natural environment on the children in the growth process. In this article ,the aspects of anti-growth narrative delineated in the growth process of subject are divided into background, ways of experiencing, and result. The child depicted by Choi is cynical and premature when considering the age of the character. This implies that the child is conscious of the depraved world around him/her which has been under the distorted influence of industrialization, as well as that he/she has already learned that the growing up to an adult more than a mere maturing process. Therefore, it is necessary to closely examine the problematic and distorted features of anti-growth among children who are the main protagonists of growth in Choi’s work. Further, by analyzing the aspect of the conflicts in the process of growth, it is possible to expand the discourse towards the underlying implications of the anti-growth narrative in the capitalist society which the author strived to realize in his works. Thus, Chapter II examines the concept and trend of the growth novel which is the theoretical base of this thesis, and the aspect of the anti-growth narrative in the historical background of the 1970s. Based on this, Chapter III discusses the how the anti-growth narrative is articulated in the actual text of Choi’s work, by disengaging its background, anti-growth experience, and result. This study expects to provide a footstep for further research on the aspect of anti-growth narratives that Choi showed prominently in his 1970’s growth novel. Moreover, this study will be an opportunity to shed a light on his excellent literary finesse once more as well as the delicate and sharp insight of the author.
