해방기 경찰영화의 등장배경과 장르화 경향 고찰: 시대적 특수성 및 역사적 의미와 더불어

Abstract

본고에서는 해방기 경찰영화에 관해, 등장의 배경과 장르화 경향을중심으로 살펴보았다. 또한 그 과정에서 영화 기획 및 제작의 시대적 상황과 업계의 환경, 작품(들)의 내용적 ․ 주제적 ․ 형식적 특성과 상영 및 흥행 방식, 비평 담론과 세간의 인식 등을 규명하고, 그것이 지니는 시대적특수성과 역사적 의미를 고찰하였다. 해방기 남한에서는 대한민국 정부수립을 전후한 때에 ˂밤의 태양˃, ˂수우˃, ˂여명˃ 등 일련의 ‘경찰영화’ 가 개봉되었다. 당시 경찰영화는 공권력에 의한 범죄 소탕 장면을 활극양식으로 스펙터클하게 전시하고 남녀 관계나 가족 관계를 중심으로 하는 멜로 드라마적 요소를 삽입함으로써, 특정한 장르 성향을 발산하며대중 관객을 소구하였다. 동시에, ˂바다의 정열˃을 비롯한 당대 극영화의 제작 경향을 공유하기도 하였다. 그리고 그 이면에는 이들 작품이 관할 경찰 관청의 후원을 받아 신생 영화 회사에서 제작되었다는 시대적 배경이 자리한다. 경찰영화는 상영 양상과 흥행 방식에 있어서도 작품간에 유사성을 띠었다. 아울러, 대부분 기획대로 완성이 이루어졌다는점과 정책적 제재 및 비평 담론을 통해서도 동시기의 극영화 경향을 주도하는 대표적 작품군으로서의 입지를 드러내었다. 이러한 측면에 영화사적 의의를 부여할 만하겠으나, 작품 내외적으로 여러 가지 한계를 노정하였다는 사실 또한 간과할 수 없을 것이다. ‘The Police movie’ was made in South Korea in the Liberation period. There were <The Sun of Night(Bam-ui tae-yang)>(1948), <Rain of Anxiety(Su-u)>(1948), <The Dawn(Yeomyeong)>(1949), etc. Policeman appeared on the movies as main persons, and criminals of smuggling appeared as bad person. Ending of the story was that the police arrest the criminal. These movies were planned at an emerging film company backed by the local National Police Agency. It showed an image of ‘the democratic police.’ The police movie had the disposition of the action drama genre. It also had the melodramatic element and exotic atmosphere. On the other hand, the results of the performance of the police movie wasn’t so good. Also, it has prohibited a pay showing by U.S. forces politics in July, 1948. However, the police movie has caused various response from the criticism field. And, it led the film making tendency of a simultaneousness period Korean cinema.
