최초의 카메라맨 이필우의 초기 활동 연구

Abstract

일제강점기 한국영화사를 연구하는데 있어 이필우는 가장 중요하게 언급되는 인물 중 한명이다. 이기세의 연쇄극 <지기>의 촬영을 맡음으로써 최초의 한국인 촬영기사로 기록된 그는 1935년에는 한국 최초의 토오키 영화인 <춘향전>의 녹음을 담당하여 한국에서 토오키 영화가 만들어지는데 결정적인 역할을 담당했다. 이필우의 생애와 그 활동에 관해 언급하고 있는 연구물의 대부분은 1968년 영화사 연구자 이영일이 인터뷰한 내용이 토대가 되었다. 이영일이 채록한 이필우의 구술증언은 가공되지 않은 이필우 자신의 목소리로 이야기 하고 있다는 면에서 중요하다. 그러나 머릿속에서 꺼낸, 실타래처럼 엉킨 기억을 역사 서술의 재료로 이용할 때에 연구자는 그 사실을 증명해야 하는, 다시 말해 실증해야 할 의무가 있다. 이필우의 증언을 이용하여 서술한 연구의 대부분이 실증이라는 측면에서 많은 문제점을 노출하고 있다. 이러한 문제는 단순히 시간 순서의 오류수준에서 그치는 것이 아니라 가치 판단의 오류, 더 나아가 역사 서술의 오류로까지 발전할 수 있다. 이 논문에서는 이영일이 녹취한 이필우의 증언을 중심으로 이필우의 초기 행적을 재구성해 보았다. 그 검토 대상은 1. 보성학교와 도쿄의 금성중학 수학, 2. 일본의 촬영소 생활, 3. 그 동안 중요하게 언급되지 않았던 통영청년단의 순회상영 활동, 4. 쇼치쿠 제작의 <석양의 촌>과 재차 도일, 5. 미국영화 <동도>의 조선에서의 흥행과 관청에서 의뢰한 영화의 제작 등 1924년 <장화홍련전>의 촬영을 맡기 이전까지의 행적을 조사했다. 이 조사를 통해 드러난 사실은 영화인 이필우의 생애를 보다 정확하고 구체적으로 밝혀낸다는 측면 외에 초기 한국영화사 연구를 보다 풍부하게 하는데 도움을 줄 수 있을 것이다. In order to study Korean film history in Japanese colonial era, Lee Phil-woo is the one person that is the most important figures mentioned. By serving Lee Gi-se’s the kino drama <Jigi> shooting, he was recorded as the first Korean cinematographer. In 1935, he recorded Korea’s first talkie film <Chunhyangjeon>, and he played a decisive role for making a talkie film in Korea. Lee Phil-woo’s interview with Lee Young-il, film history researcher in 1968 offered material for a research on his life and activities. Dictation testimony of Lee Phil-woo that Lee Young Il has accepted is important in terms of talking in Lee Phil-woo’s own voice that has not been processed. However, if researchers use someone’s memories as a material of historical narrative, researchers have a duty to prove that fact. Most studies which have used Lee Pil-woo’s testimony have many problems in terms of demonstration. These problems are not just time order error. It can be developed into error of value judgment, further historical narrative. In this paper, I tried to reconstruct Lee Pil-woo’s early activities mainly Lee Phil-woo’s testimony was recorded by Lee Young-il. The subjects of the study about school life at Posung Elementary School and Tokyo Kinjo Middle School, a studio life in Japan, The Tongyeong Youth Corps’s cyclic screening, Shochiku production <Yûhi no murâ>, going Japan again, American film <Way Down East>’s success in Korea and the production of films commissioned by a government office. It is about Lee Phil-woo’s early activities before he shooted <Janghwa Hongryeon jeon> in 1924. The fact that it became clear through this survey can clearly put out the life of Lee Phil-woo. And it also can help to enrich the initial Korea film history research.
