Currently worldwide regulations for reduction of greenhouse gases has been practiced. In the automotive field, the tendency towards Co2 and fuel economy regulations are also strengthened to cope with the reduction of greenhouse gases. To match the reinforced regulation, taking an interest in eco-friendly vehicle is increasing. And related studies have been promoted actively. In order to decreasing the fuel consumptions of the hybrid vehicles, we discuss about an optimal energy management strategy based on the Pontryagin’s Minimum Principle (PMP) algorithm for parallel plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). The optimal control problem is formulated by the cost function, the system dynamics, state constraints, and the initial and final condition. Optimal control law as a function of the input variables is applied to a driving cycle. Finally fuel economy and driving characteristics are analyzed.
