Abstract
This paper brings Agamben’s concept of the Rest to the ongoing discussion of East Asia as a regional unity that passed through a colonial experience and has been forced to adopt the asymmetrical relation of the West and Rest in the history of “global liner thinking”(C. Schmitt). In reflecting on the modern history of East Asia and especially that of Korea, Agamben’s critical concept of the Rest opens the possibility of reconsidering enduring universalism as an exclusive inclusion that furthers thinking about Korean colonial history and its ongoing trajectories in East Asia. From this perspective, this paper reviews the anthropological and political implications of Agamben’s concept of the Rest in relation to East Asian and particularly Korean colonial history as well as the legacy of the Cold War, which still has “force without significance”(G. Agamben); it compares Agamben’s notion of the “whatever singularity” as an alternative to the universalist model of the “universal singularity” and examines its potential to contribute to further discussions of East Asian Communities and Mentalities.
