During 1882-1910, in Korea there were many engineers who came from various nations, among whom Japanese engineers displayed the most considerable activity. In this study, by focusing on the activity of Japanese engineers in Seoul, how architectural activities were developed in the opening port era is examined. After 1882, as the number of Japanese resident in Seoul had been increased, the number of architectural engineer had also been multiplied. Above all, the number had been rapidly changed by the Sino-Japanese War in 1894 and Russo-Japanese War in 1904. Especially after the Russo-Japanese War in 1904, in Seoul Japanese influence were overwhelmingly expanded and Japanese engineers took the lead in architectural activity. From 1904 to 1910, The monopolization of architectural activity in Seoul by Japanese builders who resided in Seoul had been intentionally achieved with the public and private sectors. And it is clear that the monopolization process worked within advantageous situation to Japanese engineers in all construction related fields such as building material, labor and transportation, as well as subcontract system. Finally, the political power of Japan reflected in the architectural field of Korea. Furthermore, it can be estimated that architectural industry in Seoul was paralleled to Japanese one also dominated by Japanese engineers.en_US
