Abstract
둘째, 주식 수익률의 공변동에 영향을 끼치는 요인은 PR12M(과거 12개월 수익률), ME(기업규모), CRD(신용 스프레드), TERM(기간 스프레드), BTM(장부가-시장가 비율), BETA(시장 베타), PR1M(과거 1개월 수익률) 등으로 나타났다. Factors can be interpreted as the source of expected return and risk. With allocation and management on the factor exposure, investors can earn a profit in long run. Therefore, it is important to study the behavior of return and risk from factors for portfolio management. Up to these days, which factor affects on the level of expected return has been the important question in finance. Meanwhile, there is less research on which factor can capture systematic comovement of returns. In the perspective of risk and portfolio management, however, predicting the covariance-variance structure of return can be also crucial. This is our motivation and starting point. In this study, we conduct research on various factor returns and their behaviors in Korean stock market. Extending Chan, Karceski, and Lakonishok(1998), we estimate many factor returns, then investigate which factor affects on expected return and common variations of returns. Compared to existing academic studies on this topic, our research has a major difference that we use a cross-sectional regression that was usually preferred by practitioners to estimate factor return(MSCI Barra, 2007). To consider industry factors, we also control industry dummies in cross-sectional regression with three main taxonomies of factors, such as fundamental, technical and macroeconomic factors. Our main findings are summarized as the followings. First, BTM(Book to market ratio), PR1M(Prior 1-month return), PR12M(Prior 12-month return) have an explanation on the level of expected return. Usually, these factors suggest high risk-adjusted returns. Second, PR12M(Prior 12 -month return), ME(Market capitalization), CRD(Credit spread), TERM(Term spread), BETA(Market beta), BTM(Book to market ratio), PR1M(Prior 1-month return) affect on covariation of returns. Macroeconomic factors don't affect on the level of return and don't have the high risk-adjusted return. Meanwhile, macroeconomic factors can capture the structure of return covariation, because their factor returns have high volatility(Chan et al., 1998). This result shows that the factor would have effects on return covariation, even though it can't be priced. Finally, our empirical result remains robust when we change the method for estimation of factor return to the construction of zero investment portfolio. Our research has several implications. First, We investigate various candidates for factor investing in Korean stock market. With our empirical result, investors can find which factor strategies provide the high risk-adjusted return in practice. Second, in terms of portfolio management, our results shows implication how to construct an equity risk model to forecast precise covariance-variance matrix of the equity portfolio. Even though a factor does not explain the level of return, it can capture the structure of comovement of returns. Therefore, practically, incorporating these factors that can affect on covariation of returns into equity risk model is important. Especially, macroeconomic factors should be selected and considered in a risk model to capture the structure of covariance-variance of return.
