동강 김우옹의 군주 중심의 경세론

Abstract

본 논문은 동강 김우옹의 군주 중심의 경세론에 대해 살펴본 것이다. 김우옹은 사림정치가 시작되는 선조대의 정치가 직면한 가장 큰 과제를 민생의 안정을 위한 기강의 확립으로 보았다. 김우옹에게 이 과제를 해결할 수 있는 유일한 존재는 군주였다. 왜냐하면 군주는 天道의 실현자로서 독자적이고 절대적인 지위에 있는 존재이기 때문이다. 당시 군주에게 聖學을 요구하면서 賢臣의 역할을 강조하던 분위기에서 볼 때, 그의 군주 중심의 경세론은 매우 특이한 것이었다. 예컨대 이황이나 이이는 ‘군주의 표준’을 의미하는 󰡔書經󰡕의 ‘皇極’을 군주에게 수신을 요구하는 근거로 이용하였다. 그러나 김우옹은 오히려 황극을 동인과 서인을 초월하여 선악을 판단하는 군주의 표준으로 생각하였다. 이는 숙종대 朴世采가 주장한 군주 중심의 皇極蕩平論의 원형이라 할 수 있다. 군주의 존재와 역할을 강조한 만큼 김우옹에게 제왕학으로서의 聖學은 매우 중요하였다. 그는 오직 敬을 통해 민을 위한 왕도정치를 행해야 한다는 군주성학론을 주장하였다. 그렇지만 경을 강조했다는 것이 그가 군주의 修身만을 중시했음을 의미하는 것은 아니다. 제왕의 학문은 현실 정치에 확대 적용되어야 진정한 제왕학이고, 왕도정치의 이념은 정치 현실에서 실질적인 공효가 있어야 한다고 생각했던 그였기에 내면의 修己는 오히려 治人과 관련될 때에만 의미있는 것이었다. 경을 강조했던 그가 경의 주재 대상에 치인까지를 포함한 것은 이 때문이었다. This essay deals with Kim U-Ong(金宇顒)’s monarch-centered political theory. Kim U-Ong thought that the most urgent political task during the reign of King Sunjo(宣祖) was to establish official disciplines for the stability of people’sordinary life. According to him, the monarch himself was the key to the task,since only the ruler possessing absolute status could realize the teaching of the Heaven. In regard of the fact that most contemporary scholars required the ruler of Sage Learning(聖學) while placing emphasis upon the role of wise politician, his monarch-centered political theory was pretty much unique. For instance, Yi Hwang(李滉) and Yi Ih(李珥) used HwangGeuk(皇極) - ‘the standard of monarch’ - as the ground of their demand of king’s moral training. Although, Kim U-Ong considered HwangGeuk the standard of monarch as well, his stance was different; HwangGeuk was to him the basis for judging good and evil regardless of Dong-In(東人) or Seo-In(西人). This theory became the prototype of monarch-centered HwangGeukTangPyeongRon(皇極蕩平論) claimed by Park Se-Chae(朴世采) who lived in the reign of King Sukjong(肅宗). Since Kim U-Ong gave prominence to monarch’s existence and role, Sage learning as a discipline of kingship was very important to him. He advocated the idea of Sage Learning in which the ‘Rule of Right(王道政治)’ should be by and for people thorough ‘Awe(敬).’ His insistence on ‘Awe,’ however, did not necessarily mean that he valued only moral training of the monarch. King’s moral training was meaningful only when it was related to governing of people, because he thought that disciplines of kingship should apply to actual politics.That was why he paid attention to ruling of people when he dealt with ‘Awe.’
