Abstract
Display size of smartphone is considered as one of important decision factors for user satisfaction. Using 24 subjects, a study was conducted to investigate effects of three smartphone display sizes (small, medium, large), two different phone orientations (landscape, portrait), and four smartphone usages (communication-voice, communication- keyboard, internet, entertainment) on working performance, usage time, error rate, and user subjective satisfaction. The results of the experiment showed that medium display size (4.5") provided the fastest performance, the lowest error rate, and the highest subjective user satisfaction. For smartphone usage of communication-voice, both small (3.5") and medium display sizes yielded significantly faster working time than that of large display size (5.5"). User satisfaction was found to be increased proportionally with display size, as expected. The subjective assessment for simple manipulation showed statistically signigicant difference on phone orientation with the fact that portrait use was more preferred than landscape use. Major results of this study can be used as practical guidelines for optimal design of basic smartphone characteristics at the earlier design stage.
