이상(李箱)과 칸딘스키의 상호텍스트성 탐구－˂권태˃를 중심으로－

Abstract

<한국어 초록> 이 논문은 이상의 수필 <권태>와 칸딘스키의 예술에서의 정신적인 것에 대하여 사이에 우연이라 할 수 없을 정도의 유사성이 발견됨을 밝혔다. 하지만 이러한 발견의 의의는 이상을 가치 폄하하는 데 있는 것이 아니라 서구 문화와 예술에 동시대적으로 다가서고자 한 부지런하고 열정적인 독서가로서의 이상의 면모를 확인하는 데서 찾아야 할 것이다. 중요한 것은 이상의 글쓰기방식의 한 기원으로서 상호텍스트성을 인정하는 것이다. 그런 점에서 이 연구는 텍스트의 표면적 유사성을 넘어 그 발상과 사유 구조의 상호텍스트성을 밝히는 방향으로 확장하여 논의를 전개하고자 하였다. 칸딘스키의 색채 사상론에 따르면, 초록은 평안한 휴식의 색인 동시에 그만큼 권태로운 색이다. 이는 이상이 성천의 초록을 보고 느낀 감정의 교차와 경과에 그대로 대응된다. <권태>는 초록의 성천이 아니라 회색의 동경에서 쓴 글이다. 초록은 정신적 가치로 볼 때 회색과 매우 유사하다. 이상은 초록을 혐오한다 하였지만, 정말 그가 두려웠던 것은 회색조차 초록의 대안일 수 없음을 동경에서 이미 깨달은 데 있었다. 그는 잠시 ‘불나비’와 같은 정열적인 빨강의 색조에 주목하기도 한다. 하지만 이상에게 빨강은 관찰의 대상 이상을 넘어서지 못한다. 초록과 빨강이 합하면 밝은 회색이 될 가능성이 있었지만, 그는 그저 절망의 부동성으로서의 어두운 회색에 머물다가 곧장 암흑과 같은 검정의 세계와 마주친다. 그런 점에서 그 암흑은 초록의 안식, 빨강의 정열, 그 혼합의 밝은 회색조차 허여되지 못했던 식민지 지식인의 절망을 가리킴에 다름 아니다. 칸딘스키가 이상에게 영향을 준 점을 인정하는 데 인색할 이유가 전혀 없다. 하지만 어느 면에서는 칸딘스키의 사상이야말로 이상의 글쓰기 덕에 비로소 육화되고 입증된 셈이라 할 것이다. <영어 초록> This study discovered the resemblance between The Weariness [Gwontae, 倦怠] by Lee Sang and Uber das Geistige in der Kunst by Wassily Kandinsky. It implies that the former might be influenced by the latter. However, this does not mean that Lee Sang’s genius has been overestimated, but shows his sincerity to catch up with the contemporary literature and art of the Western Europe’s. The more important thing we have to do is to admit the intertextuality as one of the resources of his writings. So, this study researched the intertextuality between the two, not only on the surface but also on the deep structure of their texts, thoughts, and ideas. According to Kandinsky, the green color represents the calmness, relaxation, and also weariness. While we read The Weariness, we can easily find that this corresponds with the Lee Sang’s thought on the green color around him in Seongcheon. But he wrote that text not in Seongcheon surrounded by the green, but in Tokyo by the grey. In terms of spirituality, Kandinsky says, the green and the grey have the same value. Lee Sang showed us his hatred and disgust to the green, but he had already known that the grey could not save himself. At that time, he shortly focused the redness of fire watching a garden tiger moth. The red means passion and energy. But for him it was merely an object of observation, so he could not go beyond the weariness and nihility. If the green met the red, it became the light grey which implies the hopefulness. Nevertheless, he never tried to do it and then just encountered the black and darkness in the night. Kandinsky argue that the darkness means nothingness after the sunset, the eternal silence without any future and hope, a discontinuous pause, and the body after the death. For Lee Sang, the darkness was no more than the despair of the intellectuals during the Japanese colonial period. So he had no choice without death. We do not have to be reluctant to admit the Kandinsky’s influence upon Lee Sang. However, we also have to say that the universality of Kandinsky’s thought on color could be proved and developed by Lee Sang’s own writings.
