근대 이전 호랑이 상징성 고찰

Abstract

<한국어 초록> 본고는 근대 이전 시기 호랑이가 어떤 상징성을 갖는지와 상징성을 갖는다면 왜 그러한 상징성을 갖게 되었는지 유래를 고찰하였고, 그 결과 호랑이의 상징성을 正月ㆍ避邪, 守護ㆍ神靈, 威容ㆍ權威, 吉祥등으로 살펴보았다. 조선 사람들이 생각하는 호랑이의 상징성으로 正月과 避邪를 들 수있다. 정월 상징은 호랑이가 十二支중에 정월인 寅月에 해당하기 때문이다. 避邪상징은 호랑이가 猛獸의 왕으로써 무엇이든 制勝하고 避邪할 수 있다는 믿음이 바탕이 되는데, 더하여『山海經』의 “神茶鬱壘” 신앙과 관련 있다. 신도울루와 호랑이를 같이 그리거나 호랑이만 그려 붙여도 벽사의 기능이 있다고 믿었던 것이다. 호랑이의 상징성으로 守護와 神靈을 들 수 있다. 호랑이의 守護상징은 사신도 중에 서방 수호신인 白虎와 관련 있고,『楚辭』구문과의 결합에서 나타난다. 또 호랑이의 神靈상징은 山神靈과 관련 있는데, 최남선은 山岳은 하늘의 지상 顯現이며 山岳의 왕인 호랑이는 天帝의 지상 顯現이라며 호랑이를 신령을 가진 神獸로 설명하였다. 호랑이는 避邪ㆍ守護의 상징과 더불어 威容과 權威의 상징이기도 하다. 威容과 權威의 상징은 호랑이가 맹수의 왕이라는 점에서 쉽게 찾을수 있는데, 본고에서는 특히 .山海經. 기록에 주목하였다. 상상의 동물이나 신의 형상에 호랑이 신체의 일부가 포함되었다는 .山海經.의 기록은 같은 문자를 공유하는 사람들에게 같은 상상을 하게 하였고, 사람들은 호랑이 무늬ㆍ발톱ㆍ이빨 등에서 왕의 권위와 신의 권위, 그리고 맹수의 위용을 느끼게 된 것이다. 또 호랑이는 까치와 함께 그려져 吉祥을 상징했다. 그런데 이 까치호랑이 그림의 표범무늬가 섞인 호랑이가 호랑이냐 표범이냐가 문제였다. 본고에서는 표범무늬가 섞인 호랑이를 표범이 아닌 호랑이로 보았으며, 『산해경』에서 기이한 동물을 상상해 낼 때 호랑이와 다른 동물을 결합했던 것에서 답을 찾았다. 예부터 표범무늬가 장식으로 쓰였던 점에 착안하여 호랑이 그림에 나타난 표범의 무늬가 장식의 역할을 하였을 것으로 생각하며, 또한 호랑이 그림에 표범 무늬를 더한 것은 호랑이의 위엄을 더 극대화하려는 의도였다고 추론하였다. <영어 초록> This study was considered the cause that had some symbolism, and If it had symbolism why had such symbolism about a tiger in the pre-modern. As things turned out, It was examined the symbolism a tiger that January. Expel ghost(避邪), Protect Spirit, Dignity. Authority, Good auspices. People thought a tiger`s symbolism by ``January`` and ``Expel ghost`` in Chosun Dynasty. Because, Symbol of ``January`` was that a tiger was relevant January[寅 月] of The twelve zodiacal days. Symbol of ``expel ghost`` was that a tiger was king of the fierce animal. so, People believed that a tiger scored a victory. In addition, this was related to Sindoullu(神茶鬱壘) of 『Shan Hai Jing(山海經)』. If they painted with Sindoullu(神茶鬱壘) and Tiger or sticked the picture with a tiger that they believed ability of expel ghost. Also, people thought a tiger`s symbolism by protect and spirit. Symbol of ``protect`` related to white tiger(白虎) that protected almighty in west. and this was appeared structure of 『Cho-sa(楚辭)』. A tiger`s symbolism was associated with a mountain god. Choi, Namsun explained that mountains was symbolized the heaven at the ground. and king of mountains, Tiger was symbolized the Lord of Heaven at the ground, he explained a tiger that divine beast. (A Tiger was represented Chosun and Choi, Namsun) A tiger is symbol Expel ghost(避邪), Protect and is symbol Dignity. Authority. Symbol of Dignity. Authority can be easily that a tiger is king of savage beast. Specially, I observed 『Shan Hai Jing(山海經)』on the study. Record of 『ShanHai Jing(山海經)』was that imaginary creature or imagery of God included tiger`s parts of the body, people put to use to same letter make same imagination. People feel authority of King, authority of God, dignity of a fierceanimal at design, claw, tooth of tiger. And, People draw a tiger with a magpie. this paint symbolized good auspices. But, I thought the paint is problem that leopard skin patterned beast is a tiger or leopard in the paint. This study, I saw a tiger that leopard skin patterned beast. At 『Shan Hai Jing(山海經)』, I thought when people discovered imagine strange animal, made by united a tiger and some other animal. From the past, I created that leopard skin used by ornament, so I thought a leopard skin play role of decoration in the tiger painting. Also, I reasoned maximized dignity of tiger that add leopard skin at a tiger painting.
