Abstract
As the demand for new technologies in recently produced vehicles increases, an efficient and reliable in-vehicle network architecture becomes important. This thesis proposes a new IVN architecture by combining zonal and domain based IVN architectures. It aims to enable a progressive technology transition by becoming an intermediate step in the transition from DIA to ZIA. This research describes the network technologies traditionally used in vehicles and presents the limitations of these technologies and describes the emerging network technologies and standards that are being adopted to overcome these limitations. It also describes DIA and ZIA and proposes two types of HIAs, LHIA and HHIA, which are a combination of the two architectures. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed HIAs as an intermediate stage between DIA and ZIA, simulators of DIA, LHIA, HHIA, and ZIA are developed using OMNeT++ network simulator. The E2E delays and total lengths of wiring harnesses are measured and compared using the developed simulators. LHIA and HHIA show longer E2E delays and total length of the wiring harnesses compared to ZIA, but shorter E2E delays and total length of the wiring harnesses compared to DIA. Looking more closely at the differences with DIA, LHIA shows up to 52.43% and HHIA shows up to 29.33% shorter E2E delays, and LHIA shows up to 19.69% and HHIA shows up to 23.41% shorter length of the wiring harnesses. In conclusion, this thesis proves that the proposed two types of HIAs can be an effective intermediate step between DIA and ZIA.
