Change in the Industrial Structure of the Future Automobile Industry

Abstract

Rapid business environmental changes are taking place due to the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and there is a large convergence between existing technology industries and new technology industries. This convergence phenomenon blurs the boundaries between industries and creates a new industrial paradigm. And it also brings about new innovation achievements, provides various and new growth engines across the nation and industry, and creates great changes in existing industries. Technology and innovation achievements are always of essential to the automobile industry. In order to cope with the challenges lying ahead, maximizing the value of technology and gaining new competitive advantages would require an overhaul in the industrial structure, particularly when there are new technologies introduced, such as some breakthrough to the core components. Therefore, in this paper, factors potentially affect the changes in the future automobile industry structure are being examined and the importance of new future strategies will be reviewed as well. This study investigated what factors affect structural changes in the future automobile industry from the past, present, and to the upcoming future markets where the Change in the Industrial Structure of the Future Automobile Industry : Focusing on Relationships and Strategies of Major First Tier Suppliers(MFTS’s) in the Industry greatest growth of technology is taking place through the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Also, it will research how the structural changes would develop within the Tier Suppliers, by examining the vertical and dependent structure of OEMs, and how the entire pyramid structure within the Automobile industry could be influenced. This research will target the top 20 Major Tier Suppliers (excluding the OEMs) within the automobile industry, then categories them into a total of three periods. And, by utilizing the Patent and SNA analysis, all the chosen companies would be analyzed, so as to identify those factors that affect the change of ranking. The abovementioned studies have led to the following findings: Firstly, structural changes within the future automobile industry are taking place, and it starts with core component supply companies. The changes in the ranking of the future automobile industries, due to the core components such as batteries and secondary batteries, are particularly noticeable. This suggests that ranking changes within the industry would continue to occur depending on the development of core components. Secondly, it is expected that the pyramid structure among the Tier Suppliers would gradually change to an equal structure. The vertical and dependent structure of the automobile industry could strengthen the management efficiency, benefit the maintenance of stable relationships with the cooperative companies, and easily observe the changes in the relationships throughout the supply structures. Overall, the technological capabilities of Tier Suppliers at the top had no different from those of OEMs, that provides the possibility of full integration by core component companies in the future. In other words, ranking changes caused by core components and technological capabilities within the future automobile industry are expected to become more pronounced, and positive tension is shown among the existing companies and the new entrants. Existing OEM companies within the automobile industry are expected to continue to compete and cooperate endlessly to preserve their technological capabilities. Therefore, it is expected that, the tension brought by continuous cooperation and competition among existing top companies and the new entrants might indicate the importance of various integration|4 차 산업혁명으로 인한 급격한 환경변화가 일어나고 기존의 기술 산업과 새로운 기술 산업 간의 대융합이 일어나고 있다. 이러한 융합현상을 통해 산업 간의 경계가 흐려지고 새로운 산업 패러다임이 부상하였다. 대융합의 현상은 새로운 혁신 성과를 불러 일으키며 국가와 산업 전반에 걸쳐 다양하고 새로운 성장 동력을 제공하고 기존의 산업에 큰 변화를 만들어가고 있다. 특히, 기술과 혁신 성과가 중요한 미래자동차 산업에서 기술의 가치를 극대화하고 새로운 경쟁우위를 차지하기 위한 새로운 기술의 도입을 통해 핵심 부품 중요도에 대한 변화와 전반적인 산업 구조의 변화가 일어나고 있으며, 이는 산업내 기업들에게 긍정적인 긴장감을 불러 일으킨다. 따라서 변화하는 미래자동차 산업구조에 미치는 요인들에 대해 알아보고 새로운 미래 전략에 대한 중요성이 강조되고 있다. 본 연구는 미래자동차 산업의 구조변화에 대해 미치는 요인이 무엇인지를 알아보고 기존의 OEM(완성차 업체)에 의존적이며 수직적인 구조를 보였던 Tier Suppliers(공급 업체)들의 산업내 지위에 어떠한 변화가 일어나며 이를 통해, 전체 자동차 산업내의 피라미드 구조가 어떻게 변화하는지에 대해 연구하였다. 연구의 대상은 자동차 산업내 OEM 을 제외한 상위 20 위의 Major Tier Suppliers(핵심 공급 업체)들을 총 3 개의 기간으로 나누어 순위를 도출하였다. 또한 이러한 모든 대상 기업들의 순위를 Patent 와 SNA 분석을 통해 순위변동 요인들에 대해 분석하였다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 미래자동차 산업내 구조 변화가 핵심 부품 공급 기업들을 통해 일어나고 있다. 특히 미래 자동차 산업에서 더욱 주목되고 있는 배터리, 이차전지 등과 같이 핵심 부품에 따른 Tier Suppliers 의 순위 변화가 두드러지는 것을 확인하였다. 이는 미래자동차 시장에서 새롭게 주목받게 될 핵심 부품에 따라 산업내 순위 변동이 계속해서 일어날 것을 시사한다. 둘째, 기존의 Tier Suppliers 간의 피라미드 구조가 점차 대등한 구조로 변화할 것으로 전망된다. 자동차산업의 수직적이고, 의존적인 구조는 협력업체의 관리구조 효율성 및 안정적인 협력관계의 유지가 더욱 더 강화될 것이며, 관계의 변화는 공급 구조에서 일어나는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 전반적으로 최상위에 위치한 MFTS’s 들은 OEM 이 가진 기술 역량과 크게 다르지 않았으며 이는 추후, 핵심 부품 업체들의 전방통합의 가능성을 시사하였다. 즉, 미래자동차 산업에서의 핵심 부품과 기술역량에 따른 순위 변화는 더욱 뚜렷이 나타날 것으로 보여 지며 산업내 기존 기업들 간의 또한 새로운 진입 기업과 긍정적인 긴장감이 보여 진다. 기존의 상위 기업들과 자동차산업의 OEM 기업들은 본인들의 기술 역량을 보존하기 위해 끊임없이 경쟁, 협력을 할 것으로 예상되어진다. 따라서 기존의 안정적인 협력 관계의 유지와 다양한 융합을 통한 새로운 진입 기업들 간의 협력과 경쟁의 전략적 중요성이 전망된다.
