Dialectics of Contraries: An Apocalyptic Vision of William Blake on the Revolutions in Eighteenth-Century Europe

Abstract

The study aims to explain the following point that, while William Blake sings both of innocence and experience in his poetic language, by imbuing the apocalyptic tone to his poetic works he nevertheless intends to remind us of a hopeful possibility of our ascension into the higher state, developed from the attrition of the “contraries.” This means that, throughout his work, the poet points us to the very venue where the two contraries eventually “marry” in a dialectical manner as in The Marriage of Heaven and Hell. There, the contraries will consummate into the apocalyptic synthesis, where we will recover our imaginative and infinite qualities once lost, reaching the final, human salvation. The human history we live in after the fall of the innocence is full of cruelty indeed. For instance, just as the American Revolution in 1775 and the French Revolution in 1789 manifest it in the shapes of war and confusions, numerous revolutions ever occurred in human history have been violent and even bloody. Nonetheless, the poet strongly urges us to hope for the ultimate deliverance that is to arrive eventually. Blake’s works prophetically beckon us to look beyond our finite realm, and again into the infinitude where our senses and capacities for the human imagination will revive. The notion of dialectics is essentially about the process that yields the total synthesis in the end, so that we may not forever despair and dwell in the agonizing state of the quintessential fall, waiting in hope for the renewed future to come, instead.| 본 연구는, 윌리엄 블레이크가 그의 시적 언어에서 ‘순수’와 ‘경험’을 모두 노래하면서도 그러한 자신의 시에 묵시적인 어조를 불어넣음으로써 더 높은 경지로의 도달이 가능함을 일깨우려 했음을 논하고자 한다. 이는 곧, 『천국과 지옥의 결혼』이라는 작품의 이름에서처럼 블레이크의 시론은, 상반된 두 요소가 결국 변증법적으로 ‘결혼’하여 더 나은 상태로 완성되는 그 묵시론적인 지점을 가리키고 있음을 의미한다. 또한 이러한 원리에 따라 우리는 순수가 경험으로 이행됨으로 인해 잃었던 본래의 무한한 상상력을 결국 다시 찾아 인간 구원에 이를 것이고, 이것이 바로 우리가 경험의 세계에서 상심하지 않을 수 있는 희망의 실마리가 된다. 물론, 원초적인 순수성이 경험성으로 타락한 이후 인류의 역사는 실로 잔인함으로 가득 차 있다. 예를 들어, 1775년의 미국 독립혁명과 1789년 프랑스 혁명이 당시에 전쟁과 혼란을 불러일으킨 것처럼, 인류 역사에서 일어난 수많은 혁명은 폭력적이고 심지어 피비린내가 나기까지 하였다. 이러한 현실에도 불구하고, 블레이크는 종래에 도래할 궁극적인 인간 구원에 대한 희망을 잃지 말 것을 촉구한다. 그의 시적이면서 예언적인 작품은 우리가 처한 유한한 영역을 넘어 인간의 상상력에 대한 우리의 감각과 능력이 되살아날 무한성을 다시 보도록 한다. 왜냐하면 블레이크는 변증법적인 시인이므로, 또 변증법은 최종의 ‘합’(synthesis)을 산출하는 과정에 관한 것이기 때문에, 우리는 더 나은 합으로서의 미래를 바라보며 고통스러운 경험의 상태에 영원히 머물지 않을 수 있기 때문이다.
