초기 르네상스 회화에 나타난 이차프레임의 의미작용 연구 - 마사초의 <성삼위일체>와 프라 안젤리코의 <수태고지>를 중심으로

Abstract

본 논문은 초기 르네상스 회화의 두 작품을 선택해 회화 영역에서 ‘이차프레임’이 수행하는 다양한 기능과 의미작용에 대해 살펴본다. 마사초의 <성삼위일체>(1427-1428)와 프라 안젤리코의 <수태고지>(1440-1445)이다. 두 작품 모두에서 이차프레임은 깊이감과 입체감을 만들어내는 작업 뿐 아니라 복합적이고 함축적인 의미 공간을 만들어내는 작업에 유용하게 활용된다. 또한 특정 이미지를 가두는 단순한 틀의 기능을 넘어, 그림의 내부와 외부, 회화와 실재, 가시적 세계와 비가시적 세계를 분리하면서 동시에 이어주는 중개 기능도 수행한다. 나아가, 두 작품은 이차프레임을 이용해 르네상스의 새로운 형식과 기법들 안에 잔존하는 중세의 정신을 각자 고유한 방식으로 드러낸다. <성삼위일체>에서는 이차프레임 안의 인물들 크기를 비정상적으로 확대하면서 신의 절대적 위엄과 삼위일체 위계를 강조하고, <수태고지>에서는 다양한 이차프레임들을 통해 그림을 ‘공백’의 지배 상태로 만들면서 형상화할 수 없는 비가시적 존재의 숭고함을 강조한다.;This work aims to examine various functions and meanings of secondary frames in Renaissance paintings, and in particular, two major works: Masaccio’s The Holy Trinity(1427-1428) and Fra Angelico’s The Annunciation(1440-1445). In these two works, different types of secondary frames are used to create depth and volume in the painting, and also to form implicit and significant spaces. Furthermore, the secondary frames assume the role of the intermediary between different domains in the frame, and between the interior and the exterior of the image. In The Holy Trinity and The Annunciation, the techniques and methodologies characteristic of the Renaissance are utilized in the secondary frames reflect the medieval spirit of the age, in their own respective way. The former work emphasizes the absolute majesty of God by abnormally increasing the figures in the second frame, while the latter seeks to represent the ‘in-representable’, namely the god, by creating an absolute vacuum of emptiness through the second frames.
