이병휴의 서(恕) 개념 연구 - 성호학파의 해석의 연속성을 중심으로 -

Abstract

이 논문은 이병휴의 서(恕) 개념을 성호학파의 서에 대한 해석의 연속성에 입각하여 분석한 논문이다. 주희는 서를 타인을 대우하는 원칙이기 이전에 자신의 도덕성을 확립할 것을 요구하는 원칙으로 이해하였으며, 서가 인욕의 사사로움을 제어하고 천리의 공변됨을 보존하기 위해 자신의 도덕성을 타인에게까지 확장해야 한다는 내용을 지닌다고 보았다. 성호학파의 종장인 이익은 서를 성(誠)의 일로 여겼으며, 주희와 마찬가지로 천리의 공변됨을 실천하는 원칙이 서라고 규정하였다. 그의 제자 이병휴는 서를 성인의 일로 한정하면서 서로서의 혈구(絜矩)를 평천하(平天下)를 실현하기 위한 정치적 행위 원칙으로 정의하였다. 그에게 서는 도덕적으로 완성된 자가 타인에게 자신의 도덕성을 확장하여 천하를 평안하게 만드는 방도였던 것이다. 이토 진사이는 서를 관용의 맥락에서 해석하였지만, 정약용은 경서(經書)에서 논의된 서는 추서(推恕)에 한하며 용서(容恕)의 의미는 없다고 지적함으로써 서의 본의가 무엇인지를 강조하였다. 즉, 성호학파 내에서 서는 타인을 대하기 이전에 자신의 도덕성을 먼저 확립할 것을 요구하는 스스로에 대한 도덕적 의무 부여이다.;This paper analyzes Yi Byeonghyu’s concept of shù[恕] based on Seongho School’s continuous interpretation of it. Zhūxī[朱熹] understood shù as a principle that requires the establishment of one’s morality before it was a principle of treating others and thought that shù includes expanding one’s morality to others in order to control personal desire and preserve the common values of heavenly principle[天理之公]. Yi Ik, the head of the Seongho school, regarded shù as realization of seong[誠], and like Zhūxī, specified observing common values of heavenly principle as shù. His disciple Yi Byeonhyu limited shù to sage’s[聖人] duty and defined jiéjǔ[絜矩] as a principle of political action to stabilize the world[平天下]. For him, it was a way for a morally complete person to expand their morality to others and make the world peaceful. Jeong Yakyong emphasized the true meaning of shù by pointing out how it is discussed in the scripture[經書], that it is only inferential shù[推恕] and contains no meaning of tolerant shù[容恕]. That is, within Seongho school, shù sets establishment of one’s morality as a prerequisite for treating others.
