A Study of Jewellery with the Concept of ‘Retro’ in Oriental Thought Processes

Abstract

This is experimental research relates to the concept of the past existing in the present. It will provide another explanation of the concept of what may be termed, a cycle of taste. Many things have been influenced by the past, such as architecture, design, film and fashion, aspects of which surround and influence us. Trends keep repeating themselves. It is a matter of conjecture how many designs have absorbed aspects from the past and is it possible to accurately state that anything is entirely new? This research is focused on the question of what brings the past to the present and intends to find the answer from the psychological perspective especially that concerned with oriental thought processes. Spiritual retro, in particular, is the key to this research and this spiritual retro is considered from three Korean aesthetical aspects, these being 'Mun-in Hwa', line and Void space.

This research is, therefore, a study of retro, is not concerned with external appearance, it rather being focused on an inward view, with a Korean aesthetic influence. Furthermore, all of this study’s findings will be expressed by the outcome of specific jewellery work.;이 연구는 과거를 포함하고 있는 현대 디자인에 관한 논문이다. 우리는 여러 분야 특히, 패션과 같이 대중의 유행을 유도하고 그 유행의 흐름이 읽히는 분야에서 자주 “트렌드는 반복된다.”는 말을 사용한다. 이는 현 시대에 맞게 약간의 변화는 있지만, 과거의 디자인이나 유행흐름이 계속 나타난다는 말일 것이다. 이에 이 연구는 트렌드가 자체적으로 반복되는 데는 반드시 이유가 있으며, 그 이유를 형태나 겉모습이 아닌 그 내면적 요소로 접근하려 하였으며, 이를 풀기 위해 내면적 요소를 동양철학에서 찾고자 하였다. 이는 수없이 긴 시간동안 과거의 요소들이 그 시대에 맞게 변화를 거듭하였지만, 아직 우리주변에 남아 있는 이유로 인간의 내적 심리와 연결 지었고 이를 위해 동양적 예술품에 대한 연구가 함께 이루어졌다. 또한 본 논문에서는 과거와 현재가 공존하는 형태의 유행패턴으로 꼽은 레트로를 내적인 요소들로 푸는 과정에서 ‘영적인 레트로’라는 용어를 사용하였으며, 이는 구체적으로 문인화, 한국의 선을 표현한 조각보, 여백의 미를 통해 설명하고 있다. 트렌드와 동양철학과의 개연성을 분석하여 디자인 분야의 확장적인 가치를 추구하기 위한 본 연구는 주얼리 작품을 통해 다시 한 번 동양철학의 관점에서 레트로를 설명하고 표현하였다.
