Japanese Culture Contents and Religion : In the Case of Miyazaki HayaoPark Kyutae(Hanyang University)After about 1990s, the central axis in the globalization of Japanese culture contents is being rapidly changed from the traditional culture contents, such as Flower Arrangement(花道), Tea Ceremony(茶道), Song Ceremony(歌道), Japanese Chivalry(武士道), Noh(能), Kabuki(歌舞伎), Gardens(庭園), Sumo Wrestling(相撲), Japanese Festivals(祭) etc., to such pop culture as animation, Manga(漫畵), games, popular music, films. By the way, we come to notice that almost all the traditional culture contents in Japan are based on ‘the religious’.Factually, it seems to be difficult to see the reality of the traditional culture without ‘the religious’. Therefore, we have to pay attention to the way how ‘the religious’ can be positioned, when saying the central axis in the globalization of Japanese culture contents is being changed from the traditional culture contents to the pop culture. The purpose of this paper is to investigate just ‘the religious’ in the works of Miyazaki Hayao(宮崎峻), a worldwide master of Japanese Animation, who is highly interested in doing “reorganization of the traditional thinking with contemporary storytelling”. Then, ‘the traditional thinking’ mentioned is deeply related to the very Japanese religious mind. Grounded on this perspective, we will examinate what ‘the religious’ is in Animation, the representative culture contents in contemporary Japan, particularly focusing on <Princess Mononoke>(1997) and <Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi>(2001), the masterpieces of Miyazaki Hayao.-
