샹송 포퓔레르: 음악, 정치, 그리고 구성된 민족 정체성

Abstract

19세기 프랑스의 민요 모음집 ‘샹송 포퓔레르’(chansons populaires)는 프랑스의 전통을 보존하고 있는 농민의 노래로써 상징적인 ‘순수성’이 강조되었다. ‘샹송 포퓔레르’의 순수한 이미지는 19세기 중후반 프랑스의 제2제정과 제3공화정에 의해 정치적으로 이용되었고, 두 정권은 상반된 정치적 입장을 바탕으로 ‘샹송 포퓔레르’의 음악에 그들의 정치적 이념을 투영시켰다. 한편 두 정권의 정치적 이념에 영향을 받은 예술음악 작곡가들이 그들의 음악에 ‘샹송 포퓔레르’를 수용하게 되면서, 예술음악에도 ‘샹송 포퓔레르’와 그 정치적 함의가 영향을 미치게 되었다. 본 논문이 주목하는 프랑스 작곡가 당디와 라벨은 프랑스의 국가적 정체성을 확립하기 위한 시도로 ‘샹송 포퓔레르’를 음악에 차용했고, 그들은 각자 제2제정과 제3공화정의 방식을 그대로 이어받고 있다. 본 논문은 19세기 중후반 프랑스 사회에서 민중 노래집 ‘샹송 포퓔레르’가 가진 상징성이 정치적으로 구성되는 다양한 방식들을 살펴보았다. 그동안 간과되었던 ‘샹송 포퓔레르’의 음악적 측면을 중점으로, 음악 분석을 통해 음악이 효과적인 정치적 매체로 기능할 수 있다는 것을 확인하였다. 더불어 음악에 민족성이 투영되는 과정에서 발생한 이국주의 및 제국주의와 같은 문제적 측면에 대해 논의하였다. 본 논문은 음악과 정치의 상호관계성, 그리고 사회·문화적 텍스트로써 음악의 기능을 환기시키는 것에 그 의의가 있다.| In the 19th century, the collection of French folk songs, ‘chansons populaires’, was a song of peasants who preserved the French tradition and emphasized its ‘purity’. The pure value of ‘chansons populaires’ was used politically by the French Second Empire and Third Republic in the mid to late 19th century, and the two regimes projected their political ideology into the music of ‘chansons populaires’ based on conflicting political positions. Meanwhile, as art music composers influenced by the political ideology of the two regimes embraced ‘chansons populaires’ in their music, its political implications also influenced art music. French composers d’Indy and Ravel, who this study focuses on, borrowed ‘chansons populaires’ into their music in an attempt to establish French national identity, and they each inherit the methods of the Second Empire and Third Republic. This study examined various ways in which the ‘purity’ of the folk song collection ‘chansons populaires’ is politically constructed in French society in the mid to late 19th century. Focusing on the musical aspect of ‘chansons populaires’, which has been overlooked so far, music analysis confirmed that music can function as an effective political medium. In addition, problematic aspects such as exoticism and imperialism that occurred in the process of projecting national identity into music were discussed. This study is meaningful in evoking the interrelationship between music and politics and the function of music as a social and cultural text.
