˂시문학˃과 시조

Abstract

한국문학사에서 순수서정의 맥을 이었고 언어예술로서의 정점을 보여준 『시문학』은 자유시와 대극에 있는 시조에 각별한 관심을 보였다. 창간호 후기에서 박용철은 서정시뿐만 아니라 시조에도 눈을 돌릴 것을 약속하였다. 그는 창간호에 자신의 시조를 실었고, 2호에는 변영로의 수일한 연시조 「고운 산길」을 받아 실었다. 변영로는 박용철 외에 <시문학>에 의미 있는 시조 작품을 실은 유일한 주인공이 되었다. 박용철은 3호에도 자신의 창작 시조를 의욕적으로 실음으로써 시조에 대한 자의식을 일관되게 보여주었다. 이러한 맥락에서 정인보가 <시문학>에 가담한 것은 근대시조의 개척을 위해 중요한 계기가 되었을 것인데, 정작 정인보는 <시문학>에 번역 작품만을 남겼다. 우리는 <시문학>의 핵심인 박용철이 시조에 대한 자의식과 실천을 보였다는 것, 변영로의 시조를 받아 <시문학>에 실었다는 것, <시문학>이 종간되면서 이러한 기획이 중단된 경로에 주목하게 된다. 만약 박용철의 원래 구상처럼 <시문학>이 지속되었더라면 변영로, 정인보 등과 함께 박용철은 <시문학>의 한 축을 한국 정형시에 내주었을지도 모른다.

The literary magazine Simunhak, which carried on the legacy of pure lyricism and reached its peak as language art, displayed special interest in Sijo, the opposite of free verse. In the epilogue of the first issue, Park, Yong-cheol promised that the magazine would take interest not only in lyric poem but also in Sijo, and published his own Sijo works in the first issue and stanzaic Sijo “Lovely Mountain Path (Goun Samgil)” by Byun Young-ro in the second. Byun was the first to publish meaningful Sijo works in Simunhak. Park continuously showed his self-consciousness on Sijo by publishing his own works in the third issue as well. In this context, the participation of Jeong, In-bo in Simunhak served as an important momentum for the development of modern Sijo. However, Jeong only left translated works of Sijo in Simunhak. Therefore, the focus should be on the fact that Park, Yong-cheol, the key figure in Simunhak, showed his self-consciousness on Sijo and carried it out, and that he published Byun, Young-ro’s works of Sijo in the magazine and this project was discontinued with the cessation of the publication of Simunhak. If Simunhak was published continuously as per the original plan of Park, Yong-cheol, he might have given one axis of the magazine to Korean formal verse with Byun, Young-ro and Jeong, In-bo.
