- Abstract
|This study aims to identify common issues in the branding success cases of
performing artists and help those living in changing times establish effective
personal branding strategy. Personal branding is a process in which an individual
develops and grows an independent brand through various strategies to have own
value recognized, and it goes through the stages of exploration - concept building - brand visualization - brand diffusion - brand management.
Three performers in their 20s and 30s who succeeded in personal branding were
selected by using the Awareness Level Measurement Index (Kotler, 2006)
suggested by Philip Kotler to ensure objective standard, and artists who received
support from their agency were excluded from the selection criteria for the fairness
of the research. Also, a qualitative case study method through in-depth one-on-one
interviews with the study participants was used to collect information on the
personal branding process of performing artists. The study strived to collect
high-quality data by re-verifying the interview contents through existing media
reports and critique data. The collected data were individually coded and categorized according to the qualitative research analysis method suggested by
Creswell (2009). After, the consistent experiences of the study participants were
reclassified and were analyzed in detail according to the intra-case and inter-case
analysis methods suggested by Stake (1995).
The study results confirmed the general personal branding-related contents in an
artist's personal branding process, and they were schematized into 5 upper
categories, 9 subcategories, and 20 semantic units. Through this, the study
confirmed that the performers experienced the process of self-search and market
search during brand exploration, made efforts to establish their own unique role in
the concept building process, and valued visual design and visual aesthetics in the
branding visualization process. In addition, the study found that they planned to
continuously expose videos and additional contents as a strategy to imprint and
spread the brand to the public and used social media and live broadcasting as a
strategy for brand reputation management and communication with fans in common.
This study is meaningful in that it presents what performers should consider in
the future personal branding process through the issues common to performers with
successful personal branding. However, the limitations are that quantitative research
on the general branding experience of performers has not been preceded and that
biological sex differences are not considered. To respond to the rapidly changing
social culture in the future, follow-up study on the future branding methods of
performers will be needed. Through this study, it is hoped that performing artists increase their influence
with appropriate personal branding strategies for today’s era and create more
opportunities amid the fierce market competition.
