장소특정적 현대춤의 작품 유형 연구 : Kitt Johnson, Stephan Koplowitz를 중심으로

Abstract

본 연구는 장소특정적 현대춤을 설명하고 작품 사례 연구에 목적이 있다. 관습적인 극장에서 벗어나 특정 장소에서 벌어지는 장소특정적 현대춤은 국내에서 2010년도부터 활동이 관찰되기 시작했다. 짧지 않은 기간 동안 존재했던 예술 개념은 현재에도 많은 실현이 이루어지고 있으나 학술적 정립이 미흡하고, 개념적 이해가 현저히 부족하여 혼란스러운 상황이다. 그러나, 장소특정적 현대춤은 예술의 일상화를 실현하고, 누구나 무용예술에 접근할 수 있는 근간을 마련해 주었다. 새로운 공간을 탐색하게 하고, 생동감과 현장성이 전달되어 관객에게 신선함과 흥미를 불러일으키는 미래지향적 예술개념이다.

과거 한국사회의 자본주의적 흐름은 4차 산업혁명의 등장과 더불어 뛰어난 테크놀로지 발전양상을 선보였다. 그 과정 속에는 독자적인 아이디어가 수 없이 탄생하면서 정보의 주체인 인간은 정서적 장애를 앓는데 이르렀다. 스트레스, 완벽주의에 대한 강박 등에서 벗어나고자하는 노력이 근래에 관찰되기 시작했고, 현대인들은 치유를 목적으로 다양한 여가 활동을 즐기기 시작했다. 예술 또한 많은 이들이 향유하는 개념으로서 존재하기 시작했고, 여러 예술 작가들은 고립된 작품 세계를 실현하는 것이 아니라 타 예술과의 교류와 협업을 반복하며 독특한 창작물들을 발표했다. 그 과정에서 융•복합 예술이 등장하고, 장르의 해체까지 도달하게 되었다.

이는, 무용예술에도 입체적인 영향을 끼쳤다. 극장예술의 한계를 극복하고 고전적인 형태를 탈피하고자 시도되었던 특정 장소에서의 무용은 포스트모던시대의 안무가들로부터 시작되었다. 갤러리, 도로, 자연물, 인공물, 건축물 등 한정하기 어려운 모든 공간에서의 작품 실현이 가능한 장소특정적 현대춤은 오늘날 관객들과의 소통과 상호작용의 창구로서 기능하고, 무용수의 공간 탐색의 폭을 확장시키며, 공공예술로서 누구나 접근하여 경험할 수 있는 성질을 가지고 많은 안무가들의 공간의 이해와 해석을 통해 작품 실현이 이어지고 있다. 장소특정적 현대춤을 통한 공간개념 재발견과 개념의 특성과, 잠재적인 가능성을 안출하고 분석하기 위해 시작된 연구과정은 다음과 같다.

본 연구에서는 장소특정적 무용이라는 주제로 활발하게 창작과 실험을 진행하고 있는 해외안무가 2인을 선정하였고, 안무가 키트 존슨과 스테판 코플로위츠를 연구대상자로 선정하였다. 해당 안무가의 작품을 각 1가지로 제한하여 분석하였다. 연구 과정으로는 자료조사, 문헌 연구, 영상 분석 등을 진행하였고, 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다.

첫째, 키트 존슨의 작품 <Trailer>는 ‘맵핑’이라는 기법이 가미되어 독특한 작품 구성이 가능했다. 작품 <Trailer>는 무용수들이 일부 출연하거나, 가이드로서 존재하지만 그보다 관객들이 극에 직접적으로 참여함으로서 스스로의 역할을 인식하게 했다. 이 과정에서 안무가의 철학과 사상 중 하나인 ‘공동체’, ‘커뮤니티’ 성향이 드러났다고 분석 할 수 있다.

둘째, 스테판 코플로위츠의 작품 <Babel Index>는 익숙한 공간인 도서관에서 작품을 구성함으로서 관객들로 하여금 거부감 없는 편안한 상태를 유지하는데 도움을 주었고, 움직임이 시현되는 장소의 높낮이를 다르게 설정하고, 관객의 시각적 방향성과 높이 또한 레벨을 다르게 함으로서 작품을 감상하면서 개개인이 느끼는 감정을 새롭고 다양하게 만들었다.

특정 장소에서 실현되는 장소특정적 현대춤이 선사한 변화는 다음과 같다. 먼저, 일반적 인식에서 규정된 무용 작품의 공간성을 벗어나 한계를 넘어 새로운 공간을 탐색함으로서 작품 배경의 다양성을 촉진시켰다. 극장을 통해 실현할 수 있는 무대배경, 기술이 겸해진 화려한 무대효과 또한 황홀한 결과물을 연출하지만, 자연광, 광활한 자연, 실외공간이 주는 웅장함, 익숙한 장소에서의 움직임을 통한 즉흥적 재미 등 장소특정적 예술의 장점 또한 무시하지 못할 부분이다. 날씨 변화, 장소의 일상적 모습과 역사, 디자인, 건축물, 구조물 분석 등 장소특정적 현대춤은 안무자에게 까다로운 요구조건이 수반된다. 하지만 안무가의 이해와 관객의 참여, 실외공간에서도 충분히 사용 가능한 기계 효과들의 발달 등으로 각양각색의 다원적 작품을 창조 할 수 있었다. 장소특정적 현대춤의 미래방향성을 위하여 지속적인 관심과, 학계의 정립, 기준점이 시급하게 필요하다. |This study aims to explain site-specific modern dance and make a case study of works. Site-specific modern dance which is performed at a specific place out of conventional theaters started to be observed from 2010. Concept of the art that has existed for not a short time has realized many things so far, but academic establishment still remains insufficient and confusing due to marked shortage of conceptual understanding. However, site-specific modern dance formed the backbone to realize generalization of arts and enabled everyone to access art of dance. It is a future-oriented concept of arts that makes artists search for a new space and arouses freshness and interest for audience for its vividness and sense of realism.

Capitalistic st flow of Korean society in the past showed tremendous development of technology with the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Humans, the subjects of information started to suffer from emotional disturbance with creation of innumerable original ideas during the process. Efforts to escape from stress and obsession with perfectionism started to be observed recently and modern people started to enjoy various leisure activities for the purpose of healing. Arts also started to exist as a concept enjoyed by many people and artists presented unique creations repeating exchange and collaborative works with other fields of art instead of realizing isolated world of artworks. Convergence•composition art emerged in the process and even reached dissolution of genres.

The foregoing exerted a three-dimensional effect on the art of dance. Dance at a specific place which was attempted to overcome the limitations of heater arts and break from classical forms was started from choreographers of the postmodern era. Site-specific modern dance that can be realized in all places that are hard to limit such as galleries, roads, natural objects, artifacts and architectures has continued through understanding and interpretation of space by choreographers for its features functioning as a window for communication and interaction with audience of today, extending the width of space exploration for dancers and as public arts for everyone to access and experience. Processes of study which was started to rediscover space concept, contrive characteristics of the concept with analysis on the potential possibility through site-specific modern dance are as follows.

This study selected two foreign choreographers, Kitt Johnson and Stephan Koplowitz who are active in creation and experiment with a subject of site-specific dance. And this study made an analysis limiting to one of each of their artworks. Processes of research included data research, literature research and image analysis, and results of this study are as follows.

First, Kitt Johnson’s <Trailer> enabled unique composition of work as a method titled ‘Mapping’ was added. In <Trailer>, dancers appeared partially or existed as a guide but the work made audience recognize one’s role by enabling them to participate personally in the performance. In was analyzed that tendency of‘community’which is one of the choreographer’s philosophy and thought was exposed in the process.

Second, Stephan Koplowitz’s <Babel Index> offered assistance to audience for maintaining comfortable state without resistance as he composed the work in the library, a familiar space, making emotions of individuals anew and various by differing the height of space where movement was demonstrated and varying the levels of visual direction and height of audience.

Changes presented by site-specific modern dance realized in a specific space are as follows. First, it promoted diversity of background of works by exploring a new space escaping from and passing the limit of the spatiality of dance work prescribed by general perception. Stage background capable of realizing through a theater and technology-added splendid stage effects create magnificent outcomes, of course, but advantages of site-specific arts such as natural light, vast nature, splendor from outdoor space and extempore interest through the movement in a familiar space cannot be ignored. Site-specific modern dance imposes difficult conditions on choreographers such as analysis of weather change, usual image and history of space, design, architecture, structure etc. However, various styles of works were able to be made indebted to understanding of choreographers and participation of audience, development of machine and effects available outdoors etc. Continued interest, establishment of academic world and reference point are in dire need for future directions of site-specific modern dance.
