현대 춤 작품에 상호작용을 통한 극적요소 고찰

Abstract

Contemporary dance is not a form of art consisting only of the movements of dancers, it is the combination of choreographers, dancers, and audiences. Choreographers convey the message they want to say in their work and the various emotions that change in each scene to the audience through the dancer. Dancers are like the instruments in an orchestra, and choreographers are the composers that create the piece to deliver their message. The interaction of contemporary dance and theatrical elements had enhance the delivery of the message from the choreographers through the dancers to the audience. This paper will analyze and suggest the effects and the influence of interaction between contemporary dance and theatrical elements based on two contemporary dances: “Smoke” by Mats Ek, and “Talk to lgor: 결혼, 그에게 말하다.” by Jeon Mi-sook. Mats Ek is known for utilizing theatrical elements and contemporary dance together to deliver the message of his work. In detail, He combines contemporary dance with various theatrical elements such as acting which enhances the understanding of the audience. This feature is well shown in his work “Smoke” (1995). In this work, he uses "Mass Media" to instill an illusion that transcends time and space. At the same time, utilizing film manipulation to stimulate the imagination of the audience significantly. These theatrical elements differentiated and have brought uniqueness to Mats Ek's work which also has greatly contributed to the popularization of contemporary dance. Jeon Mi-sook is a representative choreographer who has established her own style of work by touching upon the topics that are derived from the social problems and her self-reflection. Jeon Mi-sook says that stories about our lives should be expressed and expressed by artists through their works. Jeon Mi-sook uses various stage devices and objects to convey a message containing her values to the audience as if she were telling a story. Its characteristics are also revealed in the work Talk to Igor: “결혼, 그에게 말하다.” Various emotions during the process before and after marriage were expressed creatively using various theatrical elements and expression techniques. In addition, the well-structured organization and the repetitive movements of dance have provided a better understanding to the audience while assisting the audience to grasp the main topic of the work. Due to these characteristics of Jeon Mi-sook’s work, she has contributed to the popularization of contemporary dance. The interaction between modern dance and theatrical elements is inseparable and indispensable to each other. The elements used in the work of Mats Ek and Jeon Mi-sook helped the understanding of their audience and enabled the audience to sympathize with the scene. In addition, the audience felt that their lives were projected into the work which had reduced the psychological distance between the dancer and the audience.|현대 춤은 무용수들의 움직임으로만 구성된 작품이 아닌 안무가, 무용수, 관객이 어우러진 예술이다. 안무자들은 작품에서 말하고자 하는 메시지와 장면마다 변화하는 여러 감정들을 무용수를 통해 관객에게 전달한다. 마치 곡을 창작하는 작곡가들이 여러 가지 악기를 이용해 오케스트라 합주곡과 같은 작품을 만들어내는 것처럼 안무가들은 무용수를 통해 그들이 전하고자하는 메시지를 담은 작품을 완성한다. 연극적 요소의 상호작용을 통하여 작품을 구성한다면 안무가의 메시지를 무용수를 통해 관객들에게 잘 전달할 수 있다.

따라서 본 연구는 현대 춤 작품인 마츠에크 (Mats Ek) 의 “Smoke” 그리고 전미숙의 “Talk to Igor : 결혼, 그에게 말하다.” 두 안무가의 작품 속의 현대 춤과 연극적 요소의 상호작용을 통해 드러나는 효과와 영향력을 분석하고 제시한다.

마츠에크(Mats Ek)는 작품 속의 연극적 요소와 현대 춤의 상호작용을 통해 관객들에게 전달하고 싶은 메시지를 말하며, 무용수가 메시지의 매개체가 되어 안무만 하는 것이 아닌 연기와 같은 다양한 연극적 요소를 활용하여 관객들이 이해하기 쉽게 만들어준다. 그 특징은 작품 “Smoke”에서도 드러난다. ‘매스미디어’를 활용하여 시공간을 초월하는 환상을 심어주고 동시에 필름조작을 활용해 더욱 더 관객들의 상상력을 자극한다. 이러한 마츠에크의 작품에서 드러나는 연극적 요소는 자신만의 색다른 무대를 꾸몄다고 볼 수 있고 이는 현대 춤의 대중성에서 큰 의미를 가진다. 전미숙은 자신에 대한 성찰과 사회적인 문제로부터 비롯된 주제를 작품을 통해 확장하여 자기만의 스타일을 확립하고 있는 대표적인 안무가다. 전미숙은 우리의 삶에 대한 이야기들을 예술가들이 작품을 통해서 표현해야 하고 발현되어야 한다고 말한다. 전미숙은 다양한 무대장치와 오브제를 활용하여 그녀의 가치관이 담긴 메시지를 이야기를 풀어내듯 관객들에게 전한다. 그 특징은 작품 “Talk to Igor : 결혼, 그에게 말하다.”에서도 드러난다. 결혼 전부터 결혼 후까지의 일련의 과정 속의 다양한 감정들을 여러 연극 요소와 표현기법을 활용하여 독창적으로 표현했다. 또한 동작의 짜임새 있는 다양한 구성과 동작의 반복을 통해 관객들의 이해를 돕고 작품 주제가 잘 드러나게 하여 대중성도 갖추었다고 볼 수 있다.

현대 춤과 연극적 요소의 상호작용은 불가분의 관계로 서로 없어서는 안되는 존재이다. 두 작품에서 나타난 요소들이 관객들이 작품을 이해하기 편하게 만들어주었고 공감할 수 있는 장면들이 많아서 관객들은 작품을 보는 동안 그들의 삶이 작품에 투영됨을 느끼고 비로소 무용수와 관객의 심리적 거리를 좁혔다고 볼 수 있다.
