Self-publishing as Mnemotechnics: A Study of South Korean Self-publishers and the Materialisation of Memory

Abstract

This paper seeks to examine the cultural and political implications of self-publishing as mnemotechnics through the case study of self-publishers in South Korea. Instead of relying on free digital platforms for publishing, self-publishers are committed to the production and distribution of a paper book as a means of storing individual records and memories within the community. To understand self-publishing as the externalisation of memory, this study draws on the concept of ‘mnemotechnics’ presented by Bernard Stiegler. The findings taken from in-depth interviews with seven self-publishers show that although self-publishing as memory technics commonly begins as a self-fulfilling hobby, in many cases it is ultimately used for the preservation of the memories of both individuals and communities. While doing so, self-publishers have come to appreciate the ambivalence of using the digital technologies required for publishing critically. My research findings serve as a basis for interrogating the meaning of self-publishing as mnemotechnics, while shedding light on the importance of studying digital technology and self-writing as a coupled practice. 한국의 독립출판인들에 대한 사례연구를 통해 이 연구는 오늘날 ‘기억기술’로서 독립출판이 갖는 문화정치적 의미를 살피고자 한다. 웹에서 무료로 제공되는 공간들을 이용하지 않고 이들은 종이책을 통해 사적 기록과 공동체의 기억을 직접 출판한다는 점에서 연구의 가치가 있다. 이에 이 연구는 베르나르 스티글러의 ‘기억기술’ 개념을 사용, 이들의 독립출판을 일종의 기억을 외재화하는 기술로서 이해하는 한편 그 문화적 실천의 구체적인 양상을 분석하고자 했다. 독립출판인들 7인을 인터뷰한 결과, 이들에게 독립출판은 이들에게 단순히 자기충족적 활동이 아닌 개인과 공동체의 보존을 위한 기억기술로써 인식되고 있었다. 디지털 기술과 관련해서는 이들이 출판 과정에서 필요한 기술들을 습득하는 과정에서 기술의 양면 가치를 비판적으로 사유하는 모습이 관찰됐다. 이러한 연구결과는 기억기술로서 출판이 갖는 의미를 재탐색하게 하며 디지털 기술과 자기-글쓰기를 함께 논의하는 후속연구에도 시사점을 남긴다.
