조선시대 밀양지역 성황신앙의 위상과 종교에 미친 문화적 영향력: 삼한벽상공신 손긍훈 장군 성황을 중심으로

Abstract

본 연구는 조선시대 밀양지역에서 손긍훈(孫兢訓)이 성황으로 추존된 배경과 그 위상, 그리고 지역 종교에 미친 문화적 영향력을 규명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 성황신앙(城隍信仰)은 신라 말과 고려 초 사이에 중국에서 수용되어, 고려시대에 국가와 지방 토호세력에 의해 추앙되었으며 조선시대에는 중앙집권체제 강화를 위한 목적으로 유지되었다. 밀양지역에서는 손긍훈을 추앙한 성황이 고려부터 조선까지 지역공동체를 위한 수호신으로 인정받아왔다. 손긍훈은 940년(태조23) 신흥사(新興寺)를 중수하면서 고려개국공신의 그림을 그린 공신당(功臣堂)에 묘사된 삼한벽상공신(三韓壁上功臣)의 하나이다. 손긍훈은 고려시대 그 공로를 인정받아 광리군(廣理君)에 추봉되었는데, 광리는 밀양의 옛 이름이라는 점도 주목할 만하다. 고려시대 성황은 지역 토호세력에 의해 설립되고 유지되는 특징을 지닌다. 손긍훈성황 또한 마찬가지로 그러한 영향력이 조선에도 지속되었는데, 이는 손장군이라 칭해지며 지역공동체 수호신으로서 종교체험담과 지역 풍속기록 등에서 알 수 있다. 전쟁에 참가한 지역병사들에게 음조(陰助) 신으로 나타난 점, 근심거리가 있는 지역민들이 성황사를 찾았다는 점, 지역풍속에 무격을 좋아했다는 점 등에서 그 근거를 찾을 수 있다. 손장군 성황이 타 종교에 미친 영향력 등은 조선후기 운문사에 그의 진영(眞影)이 봉안되어 현재까지도 정기적으로 행해지는 의례를 통해서도 확인할 수 있다. 이 또한 태조 왕건과 연관되며 한국 전통사회에서 성황이 지역수호신으로 신앙되어, 무속의 신으로 수용된 사례가 일반적인 것에 반해 본 사례는 불교사찰의 수호신으로 추앙되고 있다는 점도 특징적이다. The purpose of this study is to investigate the background of Son Geung-hoon who became Seonghwang-God of Miryang in the Joseon Dynasty, his status, and cultural influence on regional religion. The Seonghwang faith has been meaningful in strengthening the solidarity of local people and confirming their identity in traditional Korean society. The Seonghwang faith was accepted from China between the end of Silla and the early Goryeo Dynasty, and was revered by the powerful local families during the Goryeo Dynasty, and maintained for the purpose of strengthening the centralized system during the Joseon Dynasty. In the Miryang area, Seonghwang, which honored Son Geung-hoon of Miryang Son Clan, has been recognized as a guardian deity for the local community from Goryeo to Joseon. Son Geung-hoon is one of the Samhanbyeoksagongsi-meritorious retainers who depicted in the picture of Gongsindang. Son Geung-hoon was honored to Gwangni-gun in recognition of his contribution during the Goryeo Dynasty, and it is also noteworthy that Gwang-ri is the old name of Miryang. Seonghwang during the Goryeo Dynasty was established and maintained by powerful local families. The same goes for Son Geung-hoon, such influence continued in Joseon, which is called General Son, and can be seen from religious experiences and records of local customs as a guardian deity of the local community. The basis can be found in the fact that General Son appeared to local soldiers who participated in the war as helper god, that local people with concerns visited Seonghwangsa Temple, and that they liked shamanism in local customs. It can be said that in traditional Korean society, Seonghwang was believed to be a local guardian deity and accepted as a shamanic god, whereas this case is revered as a guardian deity of Buddhist temples.
