1950년 보스턴 마라톤에서 한국 선수 석권의 역사적 의미

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 한국 선수들이 1, 2, 3위를 석권했던 1950년 보스턴 대회의 역사적 의미를 민족 정체성과 민족적 자부심확립이라는 측면에서 고찰하고자 하는 것이다. 1950년 보스턴 대회의 위업은 한국이 정부수립 후 최초로 스포츠를 통해신생국가 한국의 존재를 세계에 알린 사건으로 1936년 베를린 올림픽부터 생겨난 ‘마라톤 민족주의’를 재점화 시켰다. 1950 년 보스턴 대회 석권은 공산주의자 색출이 일상화되어 있던 이승만 정권의 반공주의와 결합했다. 또한 이 승리는 미⋅소냉전이 본격화됐던 시기에 한국 사회에서 스포츠를 통한 국제외교의 필요성을 인식시켜줬다. 1950년 보스턴 대회의 위업은 미국 사회에서 한국을 알리는 데에 큰 역할을 했으며 부활을 준비하고 있던 일본 마라톤 계에 영향을 미쳤다. The purpose of this study is to examine the historical meaning of the Korean victory sweeping the first, second and third place at the Boston Marathon in 1950 in terms of constructing national identity and pride. The sporting achievement of the 1950 Boston Marathon was the first event to introduce the presence of a newly independent nation, South Korea to the whole world through sport after establishing its government, while reigniting ‘marathon nationalism’, which had been originated in the 1938 Berlin Olympics. With institutionalized red hunting, the sporting feat became amalgamated with anti-Communism of the Rhee Syng Man government. Also, in the wake of this victory, South Korean society began to recognize the needs of international diplomacy by way of sport in a period of the Cold War between the United States and Soviet Union intensifying. The sporting exploit had an important role in not only introducing South Korea to American society but influencing on the Japanese marathon circles that prepared its revival.
