Abstract
현재 주계향 가야금산조는 중모리와 중중모리로 한정되어 있기 때문에 안정된 구조를 파악하는 것은 한계가 있으나 이번 분석을 통하여 주계향 가야금산조의 음악적 특징을 밝히고 앞으로도 비전승산조의 연구가 지속되기를 바란다.| This paper aims to analyze jungmori and jungjungmori rhythmic patterns of Ju Gye-hyang’s Gayageum Sanjo featured in her album Oasis and further explore the musical characteristics of her sanjo melody in comparison to the sanjo style developed by Seong Geum-yeon, who was contemporary with her. The findings are summarized as follows. Ju Gye-hyang’s Gayageum Sanjo consists of 19 jungmori and 20 jungjungmori rhythmic cycles, while sharing similar melodies — that take up more than 50 percent of each cycle – with those developed by Seong Geum-yeon. Similarities are also found in 5 jungmori and 4 jungjungmori cycles, which constitute 31% and 20% of this paper, respectively. The musical characteristics of Ju Gye-hyang’s Sanjo are analyzed in accordance with modes, cadences, rhythms, and playing techniques. Her jungmori mode can be divided into three parts: the gyemyeonjo in d-cheong (central pitch) melody with 4 rhythmic patterns, the gyemyeonjo in g-cheong melody with 10 rhythmic patterns, and the pyungjo in g-cheong melody with 5 rhythmic patterns, while jungjungmori mode only employs the pyungjo in g-cheong melody with 20 rhythmic patterns. Regardless of the modes, both jungmori and jungjungmori patterns reveal cadences ended on the main notes. But the cadence of the gyemyeonjo in d-cheong melody in jungmori shows a symmetrical pattern, whereas the cadences of the gyemyeonjo and pyungjo in g-cheong melody are asymmetrical. Both jungmori and jungjungmori cycles contain mixed rhythms based on basic beats, sobak. Current Gayaguem Sanjos are mostly performed within the rhythms of jinyangjo, jungmori, jungjungmori, jajinmori, hwimori, and/or danmori. Even though this paper has some limitations to deriving a solid structure from Ju Gye-hyang’s Gyageum Sanjo due to her limited use of rhythmic cycles, I hope my analysis will help explain the musical traits of her Sanjo style and develop further studies on more of an unknown Sanjo in near future.
