Foreign direct investment net inflows and home demand conditions on high technology exports: The mediating role of technological innovation

Abstract

Against the backdrop of economic globalization and rapid science and technology development, the international competition goes on more on the track of science and technology, whose rapid growth depends on technological innovation. As a result, active moves to carry out technological innovation is the basic path to science and technology development. To a certain extent, the capability for hi-tech industry to implement technological innovation determines directly the national level of technological innovation, so it forms an important part of each country’s international competitiveness. It is crucial to cultivate the competitiveness in high-tech industries for economic development. This paper looks into the effects of foreign direct investment (FDI), home demand and technological innovation on high technology export (HTX) performance. The positive analysis shows that both FDI and technological innovation have significantly positive effects on HTX while home demand has a significantly negative effect on HTX. Technological innovation plays a mediating effect between FDI inflow and hi-tech export as well as between home demand and HTX. A proper understanding of their relationships will facilitate a country in making corresponding policies to encourage HTX expansion for national economy development. |경제 세계화와 급속한 과학기술 발전을 배경으로 빠른 성장이 기술 혁신에 달려 있는 과학기술의 궤도로 국제 경쟁이 더욱 진행되고 있다. 이에 기술혁신을 수행하기 위한 적극적인 움직임이 과학기술 발전의 기본길이다. 하이테크 산업이 기술혁신을 실행할 수 있는 역량이 국가 기술혁신 수준을 직접 결정짓기 때문에 각국 국제경쟁력의 중요한 부분을 형성하고 있다. 경제발전을 위해서는 첨단산업 경쟁력을 키우는 것이 중요하다. 본 논문은 외국인 직접투자(FDI), 내수, 기술혁신이 기술수출(HTX) 실적에 미치는 영향을 살펴본다. 긍정적인 분석은 FDI와 기술 혁신이 모두 HTX에 상당히 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 반면, 가정 수요는 HTX에 상당히 부정적인 영향을 미친다는 것을 보여준다. 기술 혁신은 국내 수요와 HTX뿐만 아니라 FDI 유입과 하이테크 수출 사이에서 매개효과의 영향도 살펴본다. 이들의 관계를 제대로 이해하면 한 국가가 국가 경제 발전을 위한 HTX 확장을 장려하기 위한 정책을 수립하는 데 도움이 될 것이다.
