of being demolished in order to restore and preserve the world cultural
heritage, Suwon-Hwaseong Fortress. Suwon-Hwaseong Fortress is an
architectural cultural asset that contains the time of the city from the
beginning of Suwon to the present. Traditional markets are also essential
for the city to survive. In this conflict, the function of traditional markets
is declining, so the purpose is to break away from the traditional market
type and connect the past and present urban contexts and create a
sustainable environment.
Suwon-Hwaseong Fortress is the first planned city built by King Jeongjo
during the Joseon Dynasty. Restoration work has been carried out from
1975 to the present along with the urban growth of Suwon. Currently,
about 92% of the fortress has been preserved, and about 8% of the
fortress remains, but there is a traditional market there.
Traditional markets have performed various roles and functions in social,
cultural and economic aspects. However, due to the development of the
city, it is gradually losing its vitality. It is not simply that there is no
place to buy goods, but the culture of the region is disappearing. Against
this background, the Suwon-Hwaseong Fortress Restoration Project is in a
state of decline and becoming a slum.
In the direction of the study, the current situation due to the restoration
of Suwon-Hwaseong Fortress and the problems with the decline of
traditional market functions will be identified and analyzed. Through this
analysis, we intend to present a plan that combines the types of traditional
markets with new ones.
Therefore, this study selected the traditional market located in
Paldal-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do and the Suwon Fortress Restoration
Area as the target sites, and will propose a method to naturally connect
the past and present urban contexts while maintaining their identities.
