배우의 연기 방법론과 기억의 연관성 연구

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine ‘memory’ as an essential material for acting and to draw out the relationships and correlations between acting methodologies descended from Stanislavski and the theory of Daniel Schacter and Endel Tulving's ‘Memory System’ by applying the experimental studies on the memory in the field of Cognitive neuroscience. Stanislavski placed emphasis on emotions, senses, and internal experiences as important abilities for actors to possess when creating a role. He realized that memories that were created by his own experiences can be converted into acting materials. He revisited memories with similar emotions that he had experienced in his environment and everyday life to consciously evoke emotions in order to effectively use them for a role. In other words, drawing memories from an experience enables an actor to express emotions with a high degree of detail and sophistication. Hence, this internal mechanism makes it possible for an actor to become one with the character. He hoped to consciously recall memories on stage to evoke emotions but the performance of acting should be implemented automatically and immediately by unconsciousness. Acting should be expressed unconsciously based on consciousness. Thus, the key learning to the actor is to train a conscious method for an unconscious moment of creation. Memory has not only been classified and conceptualized with respect to experience and unconsciousness but in various types of recalling methods. The researcher decided that it is important to find scientific foundations from a multidisciplinary perspective in order to understand memory, and tried to examine the concept of memory in the realm of Cognitive neuroscience, which has become a new discipline in modern science. Cognitive neuroscience is a study of understanding the relationship between mind and the brain which analyzes the human mentality by scientific principles. Furthermore, Cognitive neuroscience extends beyond just the study of the brain and deals with various functions such as consciousness, unconsciousness, emotions, physical reactions, and behaviors that correspond to that of the art of acting. In 1994, cognitive neurologists Daniel Schacter and Endel Tulving classified memory into five systems in an attempt to explain the diversity of the process of memory expression through these identifications. The key point of the memory system is that different types of memories are classified into separate systems and a single memory is not generated or recalled from a single system but combined with other systems through a complex process. Therefore, this study tried to analyze the effects and processes of memory on human life by distinguishing the forms of memory and interactions within. Memory appears in various forms and characteristics across mental, physical, and social phenomenons. Through a span across two disciplines, the theory of Daniel Schacter and Endel Tulving’s memory system and the memory on the art of acting, this study seeks to find the influence and correlation of memory on modern acting methodologies. The study analyzes the types and characteristics of memories used in each methodology and focuses on the possibilities of further utilization and related experiments on memory. Therefore, through understanding and analyzing memory in the art of acting scientifically, the study tries to provide the basis for the actors to approach acting with authenticity and sincerity as a living human being and accentuate one’s existence on stage. This study was conducted as follows. In chapter 2, as a theoretical consideration of Daniel Schacter and Endel Tulving’s memory system, experiences and unconsciousness in relation to memory are discussed, In chapter 3, the memory system and acting methodology were applied to find the relationships and correlations. In chapter 4, based on the scientific experiments on memory from 2006 to 2018, the study analyzed the acting methodology using the related characteristics of each memory and discussed how individual memories can function and be utilized.|본 연구의 목적은 연기의 재료인 ‘기억’에 대해 고찰하고 스타니슬라브스키로부터 파생된 연기 방법론들을 다니엘 샥터와 엔델 툴빙의 ‘메모리 시스템’(Memory System, 1994) 개념과 인지신경과학의 기억에 관한 실험 연구에 대입하여, 그 연관성과 상관관계를 도출해 내는 데에 있다. 스타니슬라브스키는 배우가 역할을 창조함에 있어 중요한 능력으로 감정과 감각, 내적 경험을 말하였고, 자신의 경험에 의해 기억이 생성되며 이를 연기의 재료로 전환할 수 있음을 깨달았다. 그는 역할에 필요한 정서를 불러일으키기 위해 자신의 환경과 일상생활에서 겪었던 유사한 감정의 기억을 꺼내어 사용할 수 있도록 하였다. 즉, 배우 내면으로부터 자신의 경험을 끄집어냄으로써 구체적이고 세밀한 감정 표현을 할 수 있고, 이러한 내적 메커니즘을 통해 비로소 배우와 등장인물이 하나가 될 수 있다고 판단한 것이다. 그는 무대 위에서 행해지는 배우의 연기가 무의식에 의한 자동적이고 즉각적인 반응으로 구현되길 바랐다. 의식을 기반한 무의식에서 그 행위가 표현되어야 한다고 본 것이다. 따라서 배우가 습득해야 할 중요한 핵심은 무의식적인 창조의 순간을 위해서 의식적인 방법을 훈련해야 한다는 것이다. 기억은 경험과 무의식뿐 아니라 여러 가지의 유형과 다양한 회상 방식으로 분류되고 개념화 되어왔다. 연구자는 기억을 보다 심층적으로 이해하기 위해서는 다학제적인 관점에서 과학적 기초를 찾는 것이 중요하다고 판단하였고, 현대 새로운 학문으로 자리 잡은 ‘인지신경과학’의 기억의 개념을 살펴보고자 하였다. 마음과 뇌의 관계에 대해 이해하고 과학적인 원리에 의해 인간의 정신세계를 분석하는 인지신경과학은 인간의 뇌 뿐만 아니라 의식과 무의식 감정과 정서, 신체의 반응과 행동 등 다양한 기능을 다루고 있기에 연기 예술과 상응하는 부분이 있다고 본다. 1994년 인지신경학자인 다니엘 샥터와 엔델 툴빙은 메모리 시스템을 통해 기억을 다섯 가지 시스템으로 분류하였고 이러한 식별을 통하여 기억이 발현되는 과정의 다양성을 말하고자 하였다. 메모리 시스템의 핵심은 각각의 시스템으로 분류된 기억이 복합적인 과정과 체계로 엮여 생성되고 회상된다는 것이다. 따라서 이러한 기억의 형태를 구분하여 기억이 인간의 삶에 끼치는 영향과 과정을 분석하고자 한 것이다. 기억은 정신적, 육체적, 사회적 현상에 걸쳐 다양한 형태와 성격으로 나타난다. 이러한 메모리 시스템의 기억의 개념을 바탕으로 현대의 연기 방법론들을 대입하여 정서와 감정을 다루는 두 학문을 통해 기억이 연기 예술에 끼치는 영향과 연관성을 찾을 것이다. 각각의 방법론에 사용되어 온 기억의 유형과 성격을 분석하고 연관된 실험의 결과를 토대로 기억에 대한 활용과 그 가능성에 대해 집중하고자 한다. 따라서 기억에 대한 이해와 분석을 통해 배우가 진실성을 획득하고 살아있는 인간으로서의 연기에 다가갈 수 있기를 도모하며 그 근거를 마련하고자 한다. 본 연구는 다음과 같이 진행하였다. 2장에서는 기억에 대한 이론적 고찰로써 경험과 무의식, 다니엘 샥터와 엔델 툴빙의 메모리 시스템 개념을 살펴보았고, 3장에선 메모리 시스템과 연기 방법론들을 대입하여 연관성을 말하였다. 4장에서는 2006년부터 2018년까지 실험된 기억에 관한 연구를 바탕으로 각 기억의 연관된 특성을 사용한 연기 훈련과 함께 분석하고 개별 기억이 어떻게 기능하고 활용될 수 있는지 논의하였다.
