조선시대 임종 장례 일기 연구

Abstract

임종 장례 일기는 임종과 장례 과정을 다루고 있다. 죽은 사람을 대신해 그의 가장 측근 중 한 사람이 기록한다. 일기는 날짜별로 기록된 자신의 일상이니 당연히 작성자 또한 본인이 되지만, 임종 장례 일기의 경우는 타인을 대상으로 한 기록이다. 통상 임종 장례일기는 회복이 거의 불가능한 상태에서 시작하여 임종의 순간이나 장례의 과정을 다룬다. 일기마다 차이가 있지만 1달 안팎의 짧은 기간을 다루고 있다. 지금 흔히 쓰는 考終日記란 용어는 임종을 주로 다루고 있기 때문에, 정확한 용어로는 임종 장례 일기라고 표현하는 것이 적절해 보인다. 임종 일기에서 가장 주목할 것은 죽음을 맞는 모습이다. 죽음이 두렵지 않은 사람은 아무도 없다. 평생 동안 했던 공부가 죽음을 맞이하는 순간에 증명이 된다고 할 수 있다. 일상의 생활을 단절하지 않고 육신이 한계치에 이를 때까지 지속했으며 사람들에 대한 태도는 정중했다. 이 모든 것에는 상대방에 대한 배려심이 바탕이 되었다. 제자들에 대한 강론을 지속하고 문병객들을 상대했다. 병세가 위중해지면 더 이상 무의미한 연명 치료에 집중하지 않았다. 본인의 몸에서 보내오는 죽음의 증후를 인정하며 의원을 청하거나 약을 먹지 않고, 음식 섭취를 줄여나갔다. 몹시 위중해지면 남에게 배변을 위한 도움을 받거나 노출이 불가피할 때도 극도로 조심했다. 생애 마지막 순간에 임박하며 정침으로 자리를 옮기고 주변 사람들에게 유언을 남기고 세상을 떠났다. 타인의 죽음을 보는 것도 내 삶을 점검하는데 필요한 공부가 될 수 있다. 그들의 죽음에서 지금까지 살아 왔던 삶의 의미를 반추하고, 앞으로 살아갈 날의 의미를 재조정하는 시간이 된다. 그들이 갔던 길이 곧 내가 가야 할 길이다. 임종 장례 일기는 연구자뿐 아니라 일반 대중에게도 웰다잉의 의미를 재고할 수 있는 좋은 이야기가 된다고 할 수 있다. When the condition became critical, he no longer focused on meaningless life-sustaining treatments. At the last minute of his life, he moved to Jeongchim and passed away leaving a will to the people around him. Watching other people die can also be a necessary study to check my life. It is time to reflect on the meaning of life that has lived in their deaths so far, and to readjust the meaning of the days ahead. The path they’ve gone is the one I have to go. The death-bed funeral diary is a good story for not only researchers but also the general public to reconsider the meaning of well-dying.
