역관(譯官) 현계환(玄啓桓)의 삶에 대한 존재론적 탐구

Abstract

본고에서는 심노숭의 ｢현계환전｣, 역관 현계환의 종적이 기록된 󰡔승정원일기󰡕, 󰡔일성록󰡕 등을 검토하고 현계환의 삶의 존재론적 의미를 탐구하였다. 현계환의 행적과 협객의 행적을 비교한 결과 현계환은 협객의 면모를 갖춘 인물이었다. 그는 첫째, 관직에 진출하기 전에 일과 학업을 병행하였고 역관이 된 후 그 직분을 성실히 수행한 생활인이었다. 둘째, 근면히 모은 재물로 곤궁한 자를 구휼하였고, 그것을 인간의 도리로 여기는 겸손한 태도를 취하였다. 셋째, 상대방을 자신과 대등하게 대우하였고 수평적 인간관계를 지향하였으며 신분 질서나 허례허식을 거부하였다. 넷째, 불의를 보면 비분강개하였고 그것을 해결하기 위해 과감히 행동하였다. 다음으로 협객을 숭상하는 분위기가 확산되어 협객이 지향한 가치를 실현한 각계각층의 인물들의 행적이 회자되거나 기록된 사실을 확인하였다. 즉 조선 후기의 협객은 사회적 병폐와 흉흉한 세태를 직시하고 어떻게 살아가야 하는지를 성찰하여 인간다운 삶의 영위를 위해 유학의 이념으로 설명하기 어려운 탈중심화한 이념 및 질서, 삶의 방식을 선택한 인물형이었다. 그리고 현계환은 협객을 숭상하는 분위기가 확산되는 시기에 나름대로 협객의 가치를 실현한 인물이었다.

Examining ｢Hyun Gye-Hwan Jeon｣ written by Sim No-Sung and historical materials in which the past of Hyun Gye-Hwan was written, I studied the ontological meaning of the life of Hyun Gye-Hwan. Comparing the past of Hyun Gye-Hwan with the past of persons who were revered as chivalrous person, I confirmed that Hyun Gye-Hwan was the character who had personality of chivalrous person. First, entering government service, he held down studying and working. Becoming an official interpreter, he performed sincerely the job. Second, spending property that he accumulated earnestly to relieve people in difficult positions, he regarded humbly good deeds as human duty. Third, seeking horizontal relationship and rejecting formal status order or empty formalities and vanity, he treated equally the other person. Fourth, witnessing injustice, he resented sorrowfully, and acted boldly to solve it. With the spread of the atmosphere to revere chivalrous person, the past of people of all social standings who realized values that chivalrous person pursued were on everyone’s lips. Chivalrous person who was a new character in late ,Joseon period faced up to the social ills, introspected how to live, and kept Confucianism at a distance and selected new ways of life to live like a human being. Considering the context, I confirmed that Hyun Gye-Hwan was the person who realized values of chivalrous person.
