Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of the two major spatial realms, gallery and commercial space, in 20th century art museums. As we entered the 20th century, the trend of ‘white cube’ began to emerge, promoting ordinary objects into an artwork in the gallery. It is very contrary to the attitude of appreciating the artworks created for mythical stories or religious symbols in the past. Yet, commercial space, the most ordinary and worldly realm, has already infiltrated on the other side of art museums since the end of the 19th century. Today, the layout of the two realms is a crucial criterion when designing art museums. Through studying the literature and case studies, this research interpreted how galleries and commercial spaces express sacred and profane nature
