성해응(成海應)이 서술한 염극태(廉極台)가 협객일 가능성에 대한 논의

Abstract

본고에서는 성해응이 서술한 「호의전」, 그리고 조선의 공식 문서인 『승정원일기』, 『일성록』 등을 통해 함경도 홍원의 부민 염극태가 백성 구제와 교육 활동을 위해 자신의 재물을 자발적이고 지속적으로 베풀었고, 이 덕분에 관직에 제수된 사실을 확인하였다. 또한 성해응은 염극태가 유학의 도리를 다하여 사회적으로 인정받았다는 점을 부각하였음을 알 수 있었다. 그런데 염극태의 행적에는 유자의 모습과 협객의 면모 양자로 볼 수 있는 대목과 협객의 면모로 볼 수 있는 대목이 있었고, 이러한 사실을 종합적으로 검토하여 염극태가 협객일 가능성이 있다고 논의하였다. 또한 「호의전」에 함께 기록된 임준원과 김만최의 행적을 기존의 기록들과 비교하여, 성해응이 협객이나 반체제적 성향으로 볼 수 있는 대목을 생략한 사실, 그리고 이는 주류에 편입하기를 열망한 서족 문사 성해응이 자기 검열을 한 결과임을 알아보았다. 이를 통해 염극태의 행적도 그 과정을 거쳤을 것이며, 이로 인해 염극태의 정체성이 왜곡되었을 것으로 판단하였다. 이러한 사실들을 바탕으로 염극태는 협객일 가능성이 있다고 추론하였다.

Examining 「Hoeu-Jeon」 by Seong Hae-Ung, official document of the Joseon Dynasty 『Ilseongrok』 and 『Seungjeongwon-Ilgi』, I confirmed the facts that wealthy person Yeom Geuk-Tae of Hongwon in Hamgyong province spontaneously and continuously dealt out his property for relief of people and education activity, and had government post. Seong Hae-Ung emphasized that Yeom Geuk-Tae who fulfilled duties of Confucianism was socially recognized. By the way among traces of the past of Yeom Geuk-Tae, there were passages appeared both aspect of Confucian and aspect of chivalrous person, and a passage appeared aspect of chivalrous person. Reviewing synthetically them, I presumed that Yeom Geuk-Tae would be chivalrous person. Comparing traces of the past of Yim Joon-Won and Kim Man-Choi in 「Hoeu-Jeon」 with the existing records, I also confirmed the fact that Seong Hae-Ung omitted passages appeared aspect of chivalrous person or dissident. This was the result that Seong Hae-Ung who desired to assimilate into the mainstream society sternly censored himself. So I considered that Seong Hae-Ung would censor traces of the past of Yeom Geuk-Tae, and identity of Yeom Geuk-Tae would be distorted. And then I inferred that Yeom Geuk-Tae had the possibility of chivalrous person. Finally I hope that understanding seriousness of thorough self-censorship of Seong Hae-Ung, succeeding researcher will be able to reanalyze biographies or articles written by Seong Hae-Ung, and review meanings of them.
