20세기 초 주얼리의 새로운 두 흐름에 대한 연구 -1920,30년대를 중심으로-

Abstract

이 연구는 20세기 초에 나타난 새로운 성격의 두 주얼리의 흐름에 대해 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이 두 흐름의 주얼리는 코코 샤넬을 선두로 등장한 코스튬주얼리와 작가를 중심으로 제작된 아트주얼리라 할 수 있다. 이 두 주얼리는 시작부터 지향한 목적에 있어 뚜렷한 차이가 있었으며 이는 현대 주얼리의 다양화의 시작점으로서 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 이에 대한 연구방법으로는 1장에서는 이 당시의 시대적인 상황에 대해 살펴보고 2장에서는 코스튬주얼리의 발생 배경 및 의미와 대표적인 디자이너에 대해 알아본다. 3장에서는 아트주얼리의 탄생배경과 특징 그리고 대표적인 작가에 대해 알아본다. 마지막으로 결론에서는 이 두 주얼리의 공통점과 차이점을 분석하였다. 그 결과 코스튬주얼리와아트주얼리는 모두 시대적 변화와 함께 전통의 권위나 신분에 대한 거부로 나타났다는 점에서는 공통적인 성격을 지니고 있다. 그러나 두 주얼리의 차이로 첫째는 코스튬주얼리는 패션디자이너와 주얼리회사에 의해 주도되었으며 유행과 치장을 위한 수단으로 대중성과 상업성을 추구한 데 반해 아트주얼리는 새롭고 다양한 표현 양식을 시도하며 작가 개인의 미감을 보여주기 위한 예술의 매체였다는 점이다. 둘째는 재료에 있어 두 주얼리 모두 다양한 새로운 재료를 사용하였으나 코스튬주얼리에는 그러한 재료를 비교적 값싼 가격과 대량생산의 용이성 때문에 사용한 반면 개인 작가들은 경제적 가치보다는 그들의 심미적, 조형적 표현의 매체로서 재료의 물성과 미학적인 조형성에 가치를 두고 이들재료들을 선택하였다는 점이다. 이렇게 서로 다른 방향성을 갖고 전개 된 새로운 두 주얼리의 흐름이하나는 현대의 상업적인 코스튬주얼리로 또 다른 흐름인 작가들에 의해 주도된 주얼리는 아트주얼리로 오늘날까지 그 맥을 이어오고 있다.

The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the flows of two jewels, each of which has distinguished feature and first appeared in the early 20th century. One of these two flows of jewelry is costume jewelry and the other is art jewelry which was centered on the artist. These two jewelry had distinct differences in their pursuits from the beginning and, significantly, this is the starting point for the diversification of contemporary jewelry. As for the research process, Chapter 1 deals with the situation at that time, and Chapter 2 examines the background and significance of the costume jewelry along with representative designers. Chapter 3, deals with the background and characteristics of art jewelry and its representative artists. Finally, the conclusion analyzes the similarities and differences between the two jewelry. Both costume jewelry and art jewelry have a common ground in that both flows have emerged as a reaction to the authority or status of tradition and evolved with the times. Still, they are distinguished in two aspects; first, costume jewelry was a tool for fashion and decoration, led by fashion designers and jewelry companies, pursuing popularity and commerciality while artist jewelry as a medium of art to show, exploring various and new styles and the personal aesthetics of the artist’s. The second is the different purposes of using various materials, even though both pieces of jewelry used various new materials such as synthetic resin and glasses. In costume jewelry, such materials were used because of their relatively low price and ease of mass production. Artist’s jewelry chose these materials based on the value of material properties and aesthetic formation as a medium of aesthetic and artistic expression rather than economic value. The two jewelry, which evolved with different directionality from the beginning, has continued developing to the present day into commercial costume jewelry and art jewelry as art.
