Effects of the Prosecution for Chaebol Tycoon’ Financial Fraud in Korea

Abstract

This paper studies the impacts on affiliated firms within the same Chaebol group after the tycoon's prosecution of corporate fraud. We analyze the effects of publicized corporate fraud on performance, investment, financing, and governance by using synthetic control methods. All empirical results show that the prosecution of corporate fraud does not have a significant impact on the Korean Chaebol companies, whether in the short term or the middle to long term. More specifically, the Korean Chaebol does not receive any penalties from the production and financial market after the corporate fraud. The criminal justice process on tycoon's financial fraud does not trigger the improvement of corporate governance, either. The self-regulation does not exist.|본문은 재벌이 회사사기 혐의로 고소당한 후 재벌그룹 관련 회사들이 어떤 영향 을 받는지를 살펴보았다. 우리는 공개된 회사 사기가 실적, 투자, 금융 및 지배에 미치는 영 향을 분석하기 위해 종합적 통제의 방법을 사용한다. 모든 실증결과는 단기적이든 중장 기적이든 기업사기에 대한 기소가 한국의 재벌기업에 큰 영향을 미치지 않음을 보여준 다. 좀 더 구체적으로는 기업이 사기를 친 뒤 한국의 재벌은 생산과 금융시 장에서 아무 런 처벌도 받지 않았다. 총수들의 분식회계에 대한 형사사법적 절차도 기업지배구조 개 선으로 이어지지 않았다. 자기 절제는 존재하지 않았다.
