코퍼스를 기반으로 한 영어 구동사 연구: 구어와 학술어 장르를 중심으로

Abstract

본 연구는 미국영어 코퍼스(COCA) 분석을 기반으로 구어와 학술어 장르별로 가장 빈번히 사용되는 구동사의 종류와 분포를 알아보고 그 의미를 분석하였다. 또한 한국 고등학교 영어 교과서에서 원어민 코퍼스의 고빈도 구동사 반영 정도를 알아보고자 하였다. 첫째, 구어 고빈도 구동사를 알아보기 위하여 COCA의 spoken 하위 코퍼스와 TV/movie 하위 코퍼스를 포함하여 두 코퍼스에서 공통적으로 가장 빈번히 사용되는 150개의 구동사를 추출한 결과, 구어 장르과 학술어 장르의 150개 고빈도 구동사 중 두 장르에서 공통적으로 사용되는 90개의 구동사와 각 장르에서 배타적으로 더 빈번히 사용되는 60개의 구동사가 드러났다. 둘째, COCA의 구어 장르과 학술어 장르에서 추출한 고빈도 구동사의 의미 빈도를 구하고, 통계적 유의미성을 알아보기 위하여 카이제곱 검정을 시행하였다. 분석 결과에 따르면 학술어 구동사 2개를 제외한 다른 모든 구동사에서 각 의미의 빈도의 차이가 통계적으로 유의미한 것으로 드러났다. 또한 장르에 따른 구동사 의미의 상대적 선호도를 알아보기 위하여 교차검증을 시행하였다. 구어와 학술어 영어의 고빈도 구동사 목록에서 공통적으로 사용되는 90개의 구동사를 대상으로 하였으며 90개의 구동사 중 42개가 통계적으로 유의미하고 장르별로 선호되는 구동사의 의미가 다른 것으로 드러났다. 셋째, COCA에서 추출된 구어 고빈도 구동사와 학술어 고빈도 구동사가 2015년 개정된 고등학교 1∼3학년 영어 교과서에서 어느 정도 반영되고 있는지 파악하고자 하였다. 분석결과에 따르면 교과서의 말하기 영역에서는 COCA의 150개의 구어 고빈도 구동사 중 128개의 타입이 등장하였고 읽기 영역에서는 COCA의 150개의 학술어 고빈도 구동사 중 113개의 타입이 등장하였다. 현재 학교 영어 교육과정에서 학습자들의 영어 의사소통 능력을 향상시키기 위하여, 구어뿐만 아니라 학술적 글쓰기에서도 그 쓰임이 늘어나고 있는 구동사의 리스트가 제시되고, 학습자들이 구동사를 학습 상황과 목적에 맞게 장르를 구분하여 활용할 수 있도록 해야 할 것이다. 또한, 쓰기 학습이 중시되는 학교 교육 현장에서 더욱 학술어 고빈도 구동사에 대한 강조가 필요하므로 장르별로 빈번히 사용되는 의미를 파악하여 적절히 사용할 수 있도록, 교과서와 참고서에 다양한 의미를 포함한 장르별 고빈도 구동사를 명시적으로 제시할 필요가 있는 것으로 보인다. | Drawing on the Corpus of Contemporary American English(COCA), the current study examined the types and distributions of the most frequently used phrasal verbs in each genre of spoken and academic English and analyzed their meanings. In addition, the study tried to get what percentage of the phrasal verbs identified as the most frequently used ones in the Korean high school English textbooks published under the revised 2015 curriculum. The results of the current study are as follows. First, this study extracted the 150 most frequently used phrasal verbs in both the spoken sub-corpus and the TV/movie sub-corpus of COCA in order to identify the high-frequency phrasal verbs in spoken genre. For the analysis of high-frequency academic phrasal verbs, the 150 most frequently used phrasal verbs in the academic sub-corpus of COCA were extracted. Also, out of the 150 high-frequency phrasal verbs in the spoken or academic genres, 60 phrasal verbs were found to be exclusively more frequent in each genre. Secondly, the chi-square tests were performed to examine the statistical differences in the frequencies of the meanings of high-frequency phrasal verbs. According to the results of the analysis, the differences in the frequencies of the meanings of the phrasal verbs were found to be statistically significant except two cases. Furthermore, the cross tabulation was conducted to investigate the genre-specific (spoken vs. academic) preference for the meanings of the phrasal verbs. The results showed that 42 of the 90 phrasal verbs were statistically significant, and the preferred meanings of the phrasal verbs were found to be significantly different by genre. Thirdly, according to the results of the textbook analysis it was found that in the speaking section of textbooks, 128 out of 150 types of spoken phrasal verbs were used, and in the reading section, 113 out of 150 types of academic phrasal verbs were used. It seems necessary to present the list of the phrasal verbs whose usage is increasing in academic writing English as well as in spoken English, and to instruct learners to use them efficiently and effectively in each genre.
