- Abstract
- This study examined the general characteristics and trends focusing on a single
subject study of video modeling interventions for children with autism spectrum
disorder through meta-analysis, and analyzed the effectiveness of video modeling
interventions. A total of 24 studies were selected for analysis, 3 domestic studies
and 21 foreign studies, after a literature screening process for papers published in
academic journals during the period from 2010 to February 2021. The overall effect
size of the video modeling intervention was investigated with 153 effect sizes from
the final selected 24 studies. In order to confirm the average effect size of video
modeling interventions for each target behavior, the target behaviors were
classified into social and communication skills, play skills, and functional living
skills, and the effect sizes for each target behavior were analyzed. To identify the
effective video modeling intervention method and intervention environment for each
target behavior, the variables corresponding to the intervention method
(intervention type, modeling type) and the intervention environment (intermediator,
intervention session, intervention place) were subdivided, and the effect size was
compared and analyzed.
The results are as follows:
First, the overall effect size of video modeling intervention studies for children
with autism spectrum disorder was Tau-U .883 (Z = 23.433, P < .05), which
indicates has a moderate effect according to the criteria presented by Parker and
Vannest (2009).
Second, as a result of analyzing the video modeling intervention effect size for
each target behavior, play skills (Tau-U .965) was found to have the largest
effect size. It was found that play skills had a statistically significantly larger
effect size than functional living skills(Tau-U .947) or social and communication
skills(Tau-U .821).
Third, in the area of social and communication skills, there were no statistically
significant differences between sub-variables found when analyzing all variables as
a result of subdividing the variables corresponding to the video modeling
intervention method(intervention type, modeling type) and the intervention
environment(mediator, intervention session, intervention place) for each target
behavior, and comparing and analyzing the effect size. In the area of play skills,
the differences in effect sizes between sub-variables regarding the variables of
intervention type, autism degree, and intervention place were statistically
significant. In the area of functional living skills, only the intervention type, age,
and mediator variables showed statistically significant difference in effect sizes
between the sub-variables. Although there is a slight difference in the effect sizes
for each intervention method for each target behavior and the variables of the
intervention environment, overall, most variables showed very high effect sizes.
This indicates that video modeling interventions are effective in children with
autism spectrum disorder regardless of intervention target behavior.
Based on these findings, it was confirmed that the video modeling intervention
for children with autism spectrum disorder is effective. This study is meaningful
in providing information on the appropriate intervention method and intervention
environment according to the autism level and intervention target behavior for
effective video modeling intervention. This is data not provided in previous
studies, and when making decisions regarding video modeling interventions it will
be usful if utilized in the clinical sites as it provides basic data to design in
consideration of a variety of variables such as intervention type, model type, age,
