Abstract
A Qualitative Case Study on the Experience of Participation in Korean Folk Dance Program that Utilizes Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) : With a Focus on International Marriage Migrant Women who Use the Shelter Kim, ji sun Dept. of Dance Graduate School of Hanyang University This qualitative case study explores the participation experiences of international marriage migrant women in a Korean folk dance program utilizing emotional freedom techniques (EFT). There were five participants in total: four international marriage migrant women using the same shelter in an undisclosed area and one former shelter resident now at a mother-child welfare center after her divorce. The program was administered eight times from October to November 2020 by the author in a dancing room located in the same area. Participation observation (class recordings), in-depth interviews (semi-structured surveys and interview recordings), and documents (author's observation recordings, self-reflection journals, and surveys) were used as research materials in a methodological triangulation. Additionally, the qualitative research results are supplemented by advance and follow-up surveys translated in the migrant women's mother language regarding anxiety, depression, and self-esteem. The collected qualitative material was divided into 3 types, 12 categories, and 49 meaning units. Parametric statistics were used as the empirical method for analyzing anxiety, depression, and self-esteem. The material has been revalidated using a t-test, which verifies the mean difference, and a Wilcoxon signed-rank test, a nonparametric statistical hypothesis test, was also used as there were fewer than five samples. The empirical analysis of this study has been verified at a p < .05 level of significance, and the statistics have been analyzed using SPSS WIN 25.0. The study results are as follows. The first type was "Joy and mirth, a step toward healing through EFT." Five categories were discerned in this type: "I decided to participate in this program because I was excited to learn Korean dance for the first time," "I relieved my stress through laughter, running, and playing like when I was a child," "I had an enjoyable time by pounding excitedly and dancing beautifully," "I felt my mind calm down through the strangely soothing EFT," and "I felt a burden off my shoulders! EFT made me healthier." The second type was "Joining together and gaining hope and courage." Three categories were discerned in this type: "I was attracted to the bright and happy image," "Doing this together as a group program made this more enjoyable," and "I gained strength through trusting the one treating me." The third type was "Cultivating myself to move forward." Four categories were discerned in this type: "I gained confidence by thinking that I am also pretty too," "I attained personal growth through healing my body and mind," "I healed myself," and "This program was even better by combining Korean folk dance with EFT." The before-and-after effects on anxiety were verified through the t-test. Before the program, M was 26.0 points while, after the program, M was 16.2 points. While the numerical value decreased after the program, the difference was not statistically significant. However, as there were fewer than five samples, the results were revalidated through the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, a nonparametric statistical hypothesis test. The result was that z was 2.023, which is significant at a p < .05 level of significance. The before-and-after effects on depression were verified through the t-test. Before the program, M was 40.80 points while, after the program, M was 35.0 points. The numerical value decreased after the program and showed a statistically significant difference (p < .05). As there were fewer than five samples, the results were also revalidated through the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, a nonparametric statistical hypothesis test. The result was that z was 2.023, significant at a p < .05 level of significance. The before-and-after effects on self-esteem were verified through the t-test. Before the program, M was 73.80 points while, after the program, M was 78.40 points. While the numerical value increased after the program, the difference was not statistically significant (p > .05). However, as there were fewer than five samples, the results were revalidated through the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, a nonparametric statistical hypothesis test. The result was that z was 2.134, which is significant at a p < .05 level of significance. The program was shown to reduce anxiety and depression of international marriage migrant women using shelters while increasing their self-esteem. Therefore, it seems that this study has helped to heal and nurture international marriage migrant women using shelters and support them in assimilating into Korean society and becoming independent individuals. This study may also be used as the base material for developing various dance programs. One can suggest that videos that fuse Korean folk dance and EFT together may provide a "social media shelter" for those who need healing in their body and mind while staying or after leaving shelters. *Keywords: Korean folk dance, Korean folk dance program, EFT, international marriage migrant women in shelters, international marriage migrant women | 본 연구는 쉼터이용 결혼이주여성의 EFT를 활용한 한국민속춤프로그램의 참여경험에 대해 탐색해보는 질적사례연구이다.
