Abstract
This study explores the meaning of Dürer’s Dragon Chandelier in the Germanisches Nationalmusuem Nuremberg and its uniqueness as “Art Collaboration.” The antler chandelier in the shape of a dragon (three heads and winged) was carved by Veit Stoß (1447/48-1533) after a Dürer's drawing. Stoß’s work shows difference from Dürer’s sketch, which suggests a collaboration between self-confident artists. In the medieval times, antlers had been regarded as treasures for collectors, who identified them with power and nobility. The connection between a chandelier and dragon motif was much more common in the Middle Ages: symbolically, the connection should be referred to ‘the tamed dragon by the light of Christ,’ which means to overcome evil. The object originally had been hung from the ceiling of the Council Chamber in the Nuremberg Town Hall, where city council members discussed the important issues of government. In this context, the combination of antler and dragon statue may have the role of guidance toward wisdom, rather than the role of decoration of room. Futhermore, it is remarkable to make a beautiful combination of art and nature. The artifact is interpreted as being natural, and the natural form of artifact can be a kind of art in itself.
