Abstract

Postmodernism in the modern craft arts began as part of efforts to overcome the problems of tediousness inherent in modernism which emphasized the standardization of consumer products. Postmodernism also put its emphisis on the importance of social role of the craft arts since the emergence of Bauhaus. The decorations, expressions of objects, and simultaneous adoption of traditional and new materials were not often used in modernism. These complex modes of expression appeared as a main trend in the craft arts, resuscitating the hand-crafted production. The development of hand-crafted production can be construed as efforts to make people recognize the craft arts which can be differentiated form mass-produced craft arts. This study is designed to predict the emerging new trends of craft arts with specific emphasis on the development of postmodernism. It also seeks to explore to what extent a design will play an important role in the development of the craft arts and what form a design will take in leading a cultural phenomenon. This study begins by explaining the development of the concept of postmodernism and its relationship with modern craft arts. It also analyzes the characteristics of the expressions of postmodernism and explains how these expressions appear in the modern craft arts. To achieve these objectives this study clarifies postmodernism`s charateristics by using the existing articles and books. The pictures of the famous artists in the craft arts are collected and classified by a chronological order to explain the relationships between craft arts theories and the systems of society, culture, and industry.
